Fail to get an IP from DHCP server after installing fvdw-sl

Postby fvdw » Sat Apr 20, 2019 9:28 pm

here it is the rar archive (9 files), extract it, contains a zip file, fvdw-sl-console-6-17-0-5jun2017-32bits.zip, and a file, MD5-sum.txt containing the MD5 sum of the file fvdw-sl-console-6-17-0-5jun2017-32bits.zip. This you can use to check if the zip file is not corrupt.
You need to extract the zip file to a location were you want to install the fvdw-sl-console. I suggest you remove the the version you have installed now first to avoid mistakes

--update files removed

Nothing.

Checksum ok.
Installation ok.
Boot sequence with back led seems ok.
then nothing... no way to find it.

Can be a possible problem the lacie firmware? here it have the 2.2.12.2?
Or may it want all disks inserted to boot properly? i don't know..

I tried with another HDD (WD Blue 500gb)
All ending ok like before and NO intermittant sound.
But no ping and no assistant result...

So, i thinking is not the HDDs I use the problem.
(i'm going to the church see you later)

No as there is no lacie firmware on the disk. The fvdw-sl firmware loads a kernel from sda6 and boot that using the root file system on sda7.
As your old 5big2 also failed to prepare a new disk but runs the firmware already installed in the past I think there must be something disturbing the setup via fvdw-sl console or extracting the archives on your pc.
Which programs do you use to extract files and to download files from our website.

Ps I think that using sda disk from your old 5big2 in the new 5big2 will be save because the new 5big2 worked ok with the lacie disks but I cannot guarantee. If you try it it is at your own risk.

A last attempt that I see us that we can use uboot console in fvdw-sl console to load a kernel with netconsole support. This would show what the kernel is doing and maybe why it fails.
I will post later some instructions, family is coming to visit today

this is how to boot using ubboot console of the fvdw-sl console

how load the new kernel using u-boot console

I assume the UIMAGE-466-KIRKWOOD-7 kernel is present in the tftp/firmware/kirkwood directory of the fvdw-sl console
Switch off the nas, start fvdw-sl console and choose as action,
start tftp server
after that choose as action u-boot console

Start the nas and wait until u-boot console interrupts the boot
and the marvell>> prompt appears in the uboot console window

in the u-boot console window give these commands
Code: Select all
setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 netconsole=6666@${ipaddr}/,6666@${serverip}/ root=/dev/sda7

use the commands exactly as they are given so do not replace the parameters ipaddr and serverip leave them as they are in this command
PS the u-boot console window has a paste option (right click on title bar)

check if now bootargs parameter is set to this string
Code: Select all
printenv bootargs

proceed
Code: Select all
ide reset
tftpboot 0x800000 firmware/kirkwood/UIMAGE-466-KIRKWOOD-7

The kernel should upload now, if that gone ok, boot it

Code: Select all
bootm

You should see in the u-boot window that the kernel is uploaded and loaded

If the kernel loads and runs it should show you in the u-boot console window after mention starting kernel the detailed output of kernel loading. If the kernel fails before netconsole is activated in the kernel then there will be no output

For unzipping zip file I use windows explorer.
For unzipping other format I use 7zip.

One thing I've to notice, IF I turn on the 5Big2 with only first (original)x disk and other 4 empty slot, i CAN'T see it in lacie network assistant.
IF i remove all disk, so if all 5 slot remain empty, idem. The nas is unattainable.
The ONLY way for communicating and manage with it for now is to boot it with all 5 original disk in raid6. is it normal? can be this information helpful?

OK, all step done, see the response:
Code: Select all
provided by fvdw
waiting for u-boot..
starting u-boot net console click on window and press enter

Marvell>> setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 netconsole=6666@${ipaddr}/,6666@${serverip}/ root=/dev/sda7

Fail to get an IP from DHCP server after installing fvdw-sl

Postby fvdw » Sun Apr 21, 2019 4:20 pm

oke it seems to hang on mounting sda8

Lets try following
load standalone kernel and connect with telnet
give this command to reformat sda8

Code: Select all
mke2fs-ext3 -m 1 -j /dev/sda8

If it mentions that it already contains a file system proceed to replace it

After that shutdown the nas
Code: Select all
poweroff -f

and repeat procedure with uboot console

Here the uboot procedure after that:
Code: Select all

Fail to get an IP from DHCP server after installing fvdw-sl

Postby fvdw » Sun Apr 21, 2019 5:16 pm

Can you load standalone kernel and connect with telnet mount sda7 on /sda7 and post output of cat /sda7/boot.log

As next trial I am going to make a seperate rcS file used at boot that will only activate an ssh server so we can talk to the nas when booting from harddisk to investigate further what going on there
