Hi,

Thank you and congratulations for the work you are doing.

I have one Lacie 5 big V1 and 5 1.5 Tb HDD but not int the original format from lacie. My device is now a brick i can't even connect to it with ethernet. I would like to try to install your kernel but i'm not clear on how to begin. What do i need to install it? do you have an installation guide?

Thank you in advance, i apologize if this questions are already answered in the thread but i have read all 65 pages and i could not found that.

I have also tried to follow the method from http://forum.nas-central.org/ but still don't work.

you could try our fvdw-sl console viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1271
It runs under windows on your PC and it will enable you to upload a "standalone" kernel to your 5big1 (assuming you did not modify u-boot that takes care of initial boot process). This kernel runs fully from RAM so it will not use the disks but it can be used to exolore any disk in the device and to install our firmware or also the lacie firmware.

For the 5big1 you need a dedicated standalone kernel, it is in the attached file.
Unpack the zip archive and put the kernel in the tftp folder of the fvdw-sl console (that means in the folder were you installed the fvdw-sl console you will will find a subfolder with name tftp, put the kernel there.
Connect you 5big1 to the lan but keep it switched off. Start the fvdw-sl console and choose load and start standalone kernel as action.
A window will pop up asking you the select the kernel to load (UIMAGE-26394-NWSP2CL-5BIG1-33-standalone) and follow the rest of the instruction. (There is more detailed info in the help menu's of the the fvdw-sl console.
Only start the 5big1 when the the fvdw-sl console is ready to detetc it (waiting for u-boot)
If the standalone kernel runs and you can connect to it with the telnet client we can continue to the next step.

Thank you, fvdw !

it seems that I succeeded connecting by telnet and uploading the kernel ! ... [s]but now telnet is asking for a login/password which i don't know. I have tried the default admin/admin and other combinations that i remember (the 5big has been switched off for ages) but do not get into. Can you help me?[/s]

Sorry, finally i found the root credentials in the help file. I'm in. What is the next step?

Thank you !

ok now you have confirmed that the standalone kernel running we can use it to install the firmware

use fvdw-sl-console version 15-3

Put an empty disk in slot 1 (the most left seen from the back)
To install the firmware there must be be no partitons on this disk. If there are we can delete them with the standaolone kernel.

Prepare the first install package for upload. Thisis done on the Pc running the fvdw-sl console.
Create in the tftp folder which is present in the directory where you installed the fvdw-sl console, a sub folder with name 5big1
Unpack the rar archive inside this this 5big1 folder so that all files in this archive or in the tftp/5big1 folder

I assume you have already the 5big1 standalone kernel in the tftp folder of the fvdw-sl console

Now start the fvdw-sl console and choose as action: install fvdw-sl firmware.
pretend that you have a nwsp2 but choose when asked to select the standalone kernel the UIMAGE-26394-NWSP2CL-5BIG1-33-standalone file
Connect with the telnet client (user: root, password: giveit2me)

Before following the instruction to upload the installer script first delete all partitons on the disk using the command
fdisk /dev/sda
when fdisk is running the command p will list the partition table. Use the command d to delete the partitions
When all are deleted use the command w to write the new partition table to disk.
Now you can proceed with the installation instruction to upload the installer script.
Follow the instructions when running the fvdw-sl installer but do not use to option to create a backup of the lacie firmware and answer "5big1" (without the quotes) on the question "What is the name of sub folder in the tftp directory containing the firmware file to write to disk ?
The rest should go as written in the instruction of the fvdw-sl console.

I think i'm not following you. sorry.

I'm a bit confused about the software and firmware i have to use.

I have installed on my windows 7 pc the 64 bit version of FVDW-SL console version 5.3
inside the installation folder there is a tftp folder where i have copied the file UIMAGE-26394-NWSP2CL-5BIG1-33-standalone.
Inside this i have created a folder named 5big1 and i have unzziped the zip file attached to your las message.

I proceed then to the "install fvdw-sl firmaware action" i select the uimage... file when it prompts and the installation starts. When the telnet console appears, i log in and delete all the existent partitions with fdisk. At this point i start following the help instructions.

upload the installer
make it executable
start the installer

I answer the questions: my disk ins not a lacie disk, has empty partition table. And then the problems begin.

I have never seen the question "What is the name of sub folder in the tftp directory containing the firmware file to write to disk ? "
the first try i have seen that it was reading from nwsp2 folder so, in the second try i have changed the name of the 5big1 folder to nwsp2 (previously i have renamed nwsp2, obviously).

I don't know what to answer to the question "Is your nas a network space 2 classic?" but i have tried both options and they all finished with error (see it at bottom). It creates the partitions, gets the firmware disk image from server (nwsp2/xfvdw-sl-15-3-big1-30may2014.img) writes firmware to /dev/sda7, /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2 and when tries to install nas database to /dev/sda5 it crashes (it seems a typing error)

tar: invalid option -- z
BusyBox v1.21.0 (2013-10-26 13:36:58 GMT+1) multi-call binary.

Usage: tar -[cxthmvO] [-X FILE] [-T FILE] [-f TARFILE] [-C DIR] [FILE]...

Create, extract, or list files from a tar file

Operation:
c Create
x Extract
t List
f Name of TARFILE ('-' for stdin/out)
C Change to DIR before operation
v Verbose
O Extract to stdout
h Follow symlinks
m Don't restore mtime
exclude File to exclude
X File with names to exclude
T File with names to include

Installing default NAS database failed.

The script will exit, installation incomplete.

i have one more doubt: when i run fdisk i get this warning:

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 182401.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

with the 2 disks i have tried. Is this a problem or should i ignore it?

this remark you can ignore, it is normal and will cause no problems

The trick you did with renaming the 5big1 folder to nwsp2 is ok as well, :scratch odd that the script doesn't ask for the folder name (need to check that later)

About the tar issue it seems that in getting the standalone kernel small enough I have reduced the size of busybox a too much. As result busybox doesn't support extraction of gz compressed files. The kernel must remain smakller then 2 MB on the 5big1 otherwise booting will fail because the bootloader moves the the kernel to a new location in RAM but when it is too big it overwrites the bootloader itself.

We can solve it by uploading a full static version of busybox after booting the standalone kernel and linking the tar command to that version.

I will collect some files and post them in a minute

attached a full version of busybox. Unpack the zip archive and put it in the tftp folder of the fvdw-sl console
Rename it to busybox1

Start the fvw-sl console and chosse action install fvdw-sl firmware as you have done already several times.
Before uploading the installer upload "busybox1"
In the tenlet window give the command
Code: Select all
tftp -r busybox1 -l /bin/busybox1 -g ip-pc

(replace ip-pc by actal ip addres if the pc running the fvdw-sl console)
Make it executable
Code: Select all
chmod 755 /bin/busybox1

rename the tar symlink
I think it is in the folder /bin
Code: Select all
mv /bin/tar /bin/tar-old

make a new symlink for the tar command
change to /bin folder first
Code: Select all
cd /bin
ln -s busybox1 tar

return to root directory
Code: Select all
cd /

ps you can check if now th tar command supports the -z option by using the command
Code: Select all
tar --help

reboot you nas and connect to the webinterface of the fvdw-sl firmware

You only need to know the ip assigned to the nas
You could use the fvdw-sl assistant for that. (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1488)

the username of the webinterface is: admin-nas
the default pasword: admin
