So far we have two recognized raid members, right? sda and sdd. sdb and sdc are faulty, and I haven't seen sde yet.

does it matter if you swap disks in a raid array, I mean if unlucky has taken out the disk and put them back in a different order, would that be a problem ?

also is it not the main purpose of having a raid array that you can loose a disk (or 2) without loosing the data ?

Yes they look different.

Code: Select all
Disk /dev/sdb: 1953525168 sectors, 931.5 GiB
Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): 5C7C3386-9367-3C4B-95F2-6B7403CA90CC
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 1953525134
Partitions will be aligned on 2048-sector boundaries
Total free space is 4050285 sectors (1.9 GiB)

Number  Start (sector)    End (sector)  Size       Code  Name
   2         4048896      1953523711   929.6 GiB   8300  Linux filesystem

Code: Select all
Disk /dev/sdc: 1953525168 sectors, 931.5 GiB
Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): 00000000-3E94-0004-1835-0A000145C1BE
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 1953525134
Partitions will be aligned on 2048-sector boundaries
Total free space is 4050285 sectors (1.9 GiB)

Number  Start (sector)    End (sector)  Size       Code  Name
   2         4048896      1953523711   929.6 GiB   8300  Linux filesystem

And yes, you can lose 1 disk and it should still function as normal. But.... and this was going to come up later. But I have an older Lacie 4 disk and when I lost a disk and replaced it, it scrambled the files so they were overwritten. So a christmas picture would be in a folder for summer with the filename of the summer picture so the summer picture was nowhere to be found. So I'm not so certain about that aspect of the raid....
