While in WOL the HD keeps spinning

While in WOL the HD keeps spinning

Postby frenbu » Thu Feb 14, 2013 6:18 pm

Hello guys!

I'm just wondering if there's something wrong with the WOL feature of my nwsp2, when I put it in wol state the HD keeps spinning at sustained speed.
Magic packet correctly turn on the nas so by itself wol is working fine but I can't explain myself this issue.

Is it a normal behaviour?

cheers
Francesco

No it is not normal business, the hard disk should stop spinning. Unless you have a har disk that doesn't react on the command to go to standby. What the brand and type ?

that disk should be able to spin down.

You can try if it reacts on the command by entering in ssh terminal
Code: Select all
hdparm -y

it should then try to spin down, but probably spin up almost directly if still some process is accessing the disk
In WOL mode no process is started before the disk is sent to standby so it should stay in standby mode.

Same here.

HDD went off, LED too.

After a few second it spins up again, LED remains off, Interface not accessible. Magic packet wakes it up again.

But the HDD still spins the entire time

mmm...it seems the wol daemon needs some periodic check if the disk is still on standby, will be put on the to do list
