WD My Book World Edition II (blue rings)- second chance?

This device is quite well made and has a good chipset. And most importantly, as a used one it is cheap and very affordable. Is it possible to install fvdw-sl firmware on a Western Digital MyBook World Edition (Blue Rings) NAS?
I think there will be many users who will want to revive this device.

That box has an Oxnas OXE800 SoC, which in contrast to the Marvel SoC's in the Lacie boxes, has no support in the mainline kernel. When I'm not mistaken the only available kernel is an ancient 2.6.24 as provided by the Oxnas SDK.
So I think running modern software on it could be a challenge.
