Update HD from 6Tb to 16Tb

Postby leone101 » Wed Mar 02, 2022 1:16 pm

Hi! i updated firmwre to last 18.2.
My Hd is quite full and i would like to change it and replace with 16tb.
Is that possible to upgrade it inside but reaching to backup all is it inside directly like clone disk or something else?

I assume you have a nwsp2, that has only one internal disk slot. You could install a new disk and connect your old disk via a sata->usb hub to the usb port and copy your data to the new disk and recreate the shared folders.

Yes I can understand. Currently the firmware doesn't have a clone disk feature. It is a good suggestion to add it, as there are more users that want to replace the system disk.
We could make a script that can be run from a linux terminal (using the ssh server) that could clone the system disk.
However in case the disk to clone contains a lot of data to be copied, cloning may take a long time as transfer speed via usb is limiting the speed.
If you have patience (it will not be available on short notice) I could have a look to make such a script. The new disk must then be connected to the usb port tp perform the cloning. After cloning the disk can be put inside and replace the old disk.

I apreciate really much your job commitment....so do u mean the basic idea could be to plug new HD to NAS front USB plug just to transfer and clone all is inside "old one"?
could be nice idea ( just need lot of time but could be really good compromize between life of hd and large amount of data).
In that script problem is to choose new amount free space for each part of HD because new one should me more capable.....i mean there is a "public" and "private" data storage so is important script can be easy to handle amount of space of new hd and not just a "clone" script

Yes that would be the idea. If the new disk is bigger the script will use extra space to increase the storage of shared folders
I think a first version of the script may be available end of this week.

Note that you will need a sata->usb adapter to connect the new disk to usb port
