Dyndns access

Dyndns access

Postby wd9895 » Sat May 12, 2012 10:44 am

Hi,

again I need some help on DynDNS access.
I created an account @ DynDNS which works as I can ping it.

I entered the account data in my router and NAS (Lan options)

Question:
How can I access the public share ? And how the protected share ?

HI wd9895,

First, if you use the router to update your dyndns account, you don't need enable the DDNS options in the Lan Setup.

If you can ping with your NAS, it's very well because you have only need to forward the port(s) in accordance with the server that you 'll use.

At least, two methods :

FTP : 20/21 and range ports for passive access (see help page),
Web explorer : Like you have a nwsp2, I strongly advise to use the https server. So, the port 443 (otherwise the port 80).

Hi Jocko.

ok, I deleted the Dyndys options in the NAS but kept it in the router.
But I have no clue about port forwarding !
Secondly I learned that the Dyndys is now a paid service so it's not updating the IP address. F*ck.
Port forwarding creates a reboot after doing it, then my WAN IP has changed. I run in circles ....

Any idea about a free dynamic DNS provider an a step by step manual ? I only want to use my NAS a sa cloud server.

Yes wd9895 , it seems that you can no longer create a free account ! :fuming (But for an old account no change ? I never paid something)
So you can use no-ip if it's available with your router.

About port forwarding, you must have in your router firmware a menu where you can set something like this :

- protocol :TCP or UDP (in your case, you must choice TCP),
- out port (or range) : (port used from internet)
- in port (or range) : (port set for the server in the fvdwsl menu)
- toward IP : you must enter the IP of your NAS. So, you must use a static IP for your NAS (select this in the LAN menu of NWSP2).

and you must repeat this sequence for each ports

I gave up today and will try it somewhen later.
All the menues are in the router but I don't know what numbers to enter.
Then I read that I can not test it within my home network. The request has to come from the WAN.

I have a D-LINK DIR-635, everything is in but I have no experience with these kind of details. Virtual servers, port forwarding .... uuuuiiiih... so touched that (yet)

I advice for beginning to try to enable an Internet access with FTP. In the help page, you find in the chapter X, information to do that.

Like this, you 'll be able to test your settings by using the site net2ftp.com !

In the login page, you use your dyndns account. So if net2com can log to ftp server with active mode and passive mode, your settings are right !

After you can try to set port for web-explorer : you must forward the port 443 (TCP) if you enable https server or 80 (tcp) if you use only http but it's not a secure access !

Note : with port 443 (or 80), you 'll be able to login to the firmware !

Note : if you test your FTPS server with net2ftp.com, the connection fails : I identify a bug in the fvdwsl and it'll be fixed in the next release.

Note : with your router, in the port forwarding menu : in port (private port) is always equal out port (public port)

Update:
dynamic dns managed successfully: xxxxx.dlinkddns.com

domain, user / pw entered in router only => it works, also on dynamic ips.

access on lacie NAS via https : success !!
I configured router (virtual server in my D-Link router, port 443 forwarded to NAS IP) and NAS => certificate installed in IE
External access to https:/xxxxx.dlinkddns.com plus User/Pw mask

access by FTP : partly success !!
I configured router (virtual server in my D-Link router, port 20/21 forwarded to NAS IP)
Test with http://www.g6ftpserver.com/de/ftptest
Questions:
Access is denied as long I open the "Login Mode". I only have access if I put it to "deny only" and keep the field empty.
That's not very secure I think.
To understand the help correctly I have to set "Allow only" and enter my home network 192.168.2 and the DDNS domain xxxxx.dlinkddns.com . But this doesn't work.

Any idea ?

Glad to hear that you made progress... :thumbup

Note : if you use the site g6ftpserver.com you can't fully test your FTP settings. The login sequence fails when it tries to use the command CLNT which it's not implemented with our FTP server. The site doesn't validate the data exchange.
So, you must use net2ftp.

If you choose "allow only", you must enter the ip address of the site (or a mask like '178.63.' for net2ftp) You can easily find the IP address in the FTP log after trying to login.

allow only <=> only these ip address can login to the ftp server
deny only <=> all ip can login to the ftp server except for these ip address.

Note : the mask '192.168.2' is wrong, you forgot to add '.' at the end : '192.168.2.'

Hi Jocko,

now everything works, BUT Login Mode => Allow only & Deny only hav to be exchanged.

I entered my xxxxxx.dlinkddns.com AND Deny only => working
If I enter my xxxxxx.dlinkddns.com AND 192.168.2. AND Allow only => NOT working

I'm pretty sure that the check buttons are described wrongly ? It's just the other way around. What do you think ?

Net2FTP is much better, thanks.
