I started to try if we can integrate logitech squeezebox server
This will probably only work properly on nwsp2 and isp1 as it requires perl and mysql and also more memory then spd8020 and nwsp1 has to laod databases and so on.

:bananadance

got squeezebox 7.0 and 7.3.4 working after a lot of trial and error
It needs a full blown perl and mysql package installed :crazy and then you get all kind of dependencies and versions issue in perl modules :fists

Because of the need for perl and mysql it will be not part of the firmware file as then we would add at least another 100 MB. It will become a kind of "add on" to be installed seperately. Also I think it will not run on the sp8020 and nwsp1, on the the nwsp2 squeezebox use 50 MB of memory at times

finally I got Logitech Media Server 7.7.2 running but also 7.8.0.
The nice thing from the versions 7.7 and higher is that they have a uPNP media server on board that can also serve pictures and videos beside music. Also it run using sqlite3 and that means less overload then the older ones using full version of mysql.

I almost gave up because it kept giving segmentation faults when scanning directories with pictures and videos or hang forever. Finally I managed to recompile the media scan binary it uses for our platform and with the libraries present in the firmware. The ones as supplied by Logitech are not compatible although they mention arm-linux. The point is that those from Logitech are dependent on other more recent versions of standard libraries :dry Replacing those is risky as several binaries in the firmware rely on the libraries as present in the firmware. Anyhow I managed to get it running. Integration in the firmware will take some time

here a screen shot from the webinterface of the server while running including using a mediaplayer softsqueeze to connect to it

so far it runs stable on the nwsp2 :punk

I tried to run it on the spd8020 as well, it loads but but it took almost 1/2 hour to load all modules :crazy, however despite everything seems to be loaded it never succeeds to fire up the Logitech web interface after a while it gives a seg fault. The system memory of the spd8020 (and nwsp1) are simply to small for this application. The very long time for loading the server is already a clear indication for that. Sorry guys but for the spd8020 and nwsp1 this has no use or make sense to try to use it.

For nwsp2 and isp1 it seems to work ok.
I plan to make some modifications in the firmware when releasing version 12-1 that will enable us to install Logitech Mediaserver as add on package. Perl and LMS will take at least 100 MB of space and grow rapidly when you add many media files. Therfore it must be installed outside the system partition as is also done for twonky and other servers. This will also assure that settings are maintained when upgrading the base firmware.

I finished the testing, it works without any problems on my system. I have sent today the files to Jocko so he can test it as well. If ok it will be included in next release.

Can I use squeezebox to stream the videos (like MKV) to Smart TV instead of miniDNLA?

It has a dlna server that can stream videos to any dlna client. If it supports mkv I don't know, but I think it does. Unfortunate my TV doesn't support that format so I cannot test. Guess you need to ask Logitech

@silver

here you can find the reelease notes from 7.7.0 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Release_Notes

The version I prepared is 7.8.0 that has at least the same capabilituies as 7.7.0 I guess. And so to see is mkv indeed supported
