Got a used NWS2 !!

Got a used NWS2 !!

Uiiiiihh, I got one. And I'm happy that it's a "classic" one with a 2TB Seagate. This is the amount of capacity I exactly wanted to buy.
As it is used I first updated the HDD firmware from CC34 to CC35. Now it is very quiet and still working properly ;)

Then I deep dived into the preparations to enable the "extended fvdw" firmware. I have to admit... a little nightmare for a Windows user. Command lines, case sensitive order lines ...etc, etc.
So I firstly burned an UNBUTU DVD Linux, searched a big 8GB USB stick to save the original Lacie files - who knows .... and my internal HDDs were disconnected to be save ;) and to avoid any mixes of partition names.

So I printed the fvdw installation guide and booted the Linux. All went fine (after the second try as I overread one exact syntax during first try). Keep in mind if the HDD is the only one in the system the right drive name is /dev/sda iso. /dev/sdb.
For unexperienced users I believe the process is simply overdone, not possible. I would not recommend to do this although it is described step-by-step. At least ask for a Linix experienced friend.

In the meantime FW 12.0 incl the ITunes patch is running. The speed is not comparable to the SPD8020. Much much faster !
Big big thanks to this migration and guide to this fantastic piece of software !!

yes it is not comparable with the spd8020 performace, cpu has twice the clock speed and it has 256 MB of RAM instead on 16 MB.

PS there is one point on the nwsp2 and thats the fact that it has no fan. It can run pretty hot. I have put the device on its "side" instead of normal position to let the heat escape easier. I use a WD green HDD that runs at 5700 rpm, temperature never exceeded 44 oC until today.
Also we included in fvdw-sl-12-0 a temp guard daemon that shuts down the device when it exceeds max temp set for HDD (assuming the HDD inside supports the commands used). Its in disk setup menu. I would recommend to enable this daemon. PS there will be no warning when the temp guard daemon will shut down the system

looks good Silver, but as said mines never exceeded 44 oC so far without such a cooler. But as said I have put it on its side and it uses a 5700 rpm disk WD "green" disk. With the 64 MB cache the transfer speed is same as a 7200 rpm disk. My SPD8020, which has a fan and using a hitachi 1 TB disk sometimes reaches 48 oC.

what shall I say !? Great. I fell home as it looks same vs. the SPD8020 and the combo of the FW and the Lacie is well done.
For the future I will use the Philips as a backup medium and the Lacie as performance NAS. The speed diff. is surprisingly big ;-)

now you see what adding 256 MB and a somewhat faster processor makes for a difference. Think the cost of the hardware used does not differ too much from spd8020. Too bad Philips didn't use this as well, I am sure that than the sales quantities would have been better. On the other then probably we never would have started to develop this firmware :-D
