Req: Apple TV 3 / Air Play support

Req: Apple TV 3 / Air Play support

Postby johan72 » Fri Mar 30, 2012 5:41 pm

I do enjoy using the FireFly media server in combination with my Pc's runnning iTunes.
This week I've aquired a Apple TV 3, it lets me browse iTunes libraries on PC's.

Now I wonder, is it somehow possible to connect to the NAS using a Apple TV 3?
Is this possible with the current firmware feature set, or what?

Any suggestions, ideas are welcome.

I don't have an apple TV johan so i do not know. From what i understood from firefly it should be capable to communicate with any iTunes client so you would expect it can use the firefly server. But I assume you are aiming at streaming video to the apple TV and not audio. Thats more difficult. When googling on the internet with firefly apple Tv many hits are found...and from what i read it seesm not difficult.
Sorry that i can't help you better

@fvdw
Thanxs for your response.
Indead it would be like streaming, I can browse iTunes libraries on my PC's (running iTunes) using the Apple TV and playback on it.
It seems apple has added pairing to enable streaming, pairing is not supported by the firefly media server.
I found forums/threads of people looking for the same functionality it seems the mainstream NAS solutions make use of Firefly.

found this on the Apple forum:
Apple TV requires either a synched or streamed sever to respond with a 4 digit code upon initial link-up.
The NAS's use the mt-daap/FireFly media server which does not have the capability to respond with a 4 digit code response.
Besides, iTunes 10 broke the ability of most NAS mt-daap/FireFly servers to share thru iTunes.

BTW, the mt-daap/FireFly server s/w hasn't been updated in two years, and it's speculated on the 'Net that the developer has stopped the development.
However, I new guy is furthering the development under the generic name of "forked-daapd".

Maybe this will be resolved in the near feature, meanwhile I use my PC as a middle man.

grtz
