I assume that you used that one.
Another reason why telnet may time is if you have more then one ethernet adapter in your PC for example the wired one and a wireless one, disable all ethernet adapters except the one using the wired connection that is connected to your router

Either we are at cross-purposes or I am totally confused (or both!).

My problem ever since I recently began to try to use the NAS again (after having it left unused for a long interval meanwhile making the upgrades to my PC I already mentioned) has been that I can't get access to the fvdw-sl web interface. All attempts I've so far made to do so have failed. Consequently I've never been able to reach a position where I can install or reinstall or upgrade the existing fvdw firmware on my NS2.

So I'm completely deadlocked

(Incidentally, I have no wireless network adapter on my PC, and only one wired one).

This is to upgrade the firmware and of course you need to have a web access on the nas.
Currently it is not yet an issue, you have to bring up your nas in your LAN first.

Recall: fvdw-sl console must be used only to make a first install or repair the firmware when you lost any access on the nas. To upgrade the firmware, you have to use the firmware interface.

Currently you have three ways to restore nas accesses:
- put your nas in a lan with the same former subnet
- extract the disk, and edit manually the nas database
- use fvdw-sl console to edit the nas database

About the last choice:
Maybe you can also use another lan wire between the nas and the router. On your router did you check if the used lan port, is not a crossed port ? (for example to TV box)

About the first point, if you have another router, you can try to create a sub network with it and use the former subnet where you put only your laptop and the nas

Unfortunately I can't find any way to obtain that information from the Lynksys's web interface.

As to the second, I have had a try at getting the case open, using four credit-cards, but got nowhere. It must be possible (because you, and others, have done it) but I'm blowed if I can see how.

That leaves me at present with only the first. I'll now have a try at that, and will report back.

To remove the casing, put your nail between cover and bottom were the led is pull a little outward and lift up the cover

Progress at last! I now have the fvdw Web interface up on my screen.

What I did was to
a) convert my Buffalo router back into functioning as a router (it has a simple 3-position switch on the back for that purpose); after I replaced it with the Linksys I had re-tasked it as an extra - wireless - "dumb" network switch upstairs
b) connect the Linksys LAN port to the Buffalo's Internet port
c) connect my desktop Windows PC, and the NAS running fvdw ver. 16.1 (yes, turned out I had upgraded it!), to other Buffalo LAN ports
d) connect to and configure the Buffalo's Web interface, with only two DHCP clients: my desktop PC and the NAS (LAN side IP address 192.168.11.1, DCHP IP address pool 192.168.11.2 - 64; as compared with my Linksys IPs in the standard pattern 192.168.1.1 - zzz)

So I now have (temporarily) two routers daisy-chained but independent. I believe that that's what you intended by the first of your three ways to restore access.

My next task is to upgrade the firmware to ver. 17. But to do that I first have to install the rollup patch, and there I'm brought to a halt because I've completely forgotten how to go about saving the attached zip archive in the fvdw shared folder. I know how to SSH (using PuTTY) into fvdw-sl but I can't remember how I move the zip-file into the /share/1000 directory. Would you please be so kind as to remind me?

Why you do not include now the nas in the main LAN (192.168.1.0/24). You just need to enable the dynamic IP option in the LAN setup :scratch Think also to set at the same time the workgroup to have the same one on your laptop and the NAS.

Of course after doing it you need to include again your laptop in main LAN

Sorry if it seems a stupid question, but having downloaded the zip-file to my desktop Windows computer (not a laptop BTW) how do I get it from there into the fvdw shared folder on the NAS?

I dimly recall that previously I could see all of my shared folders on my desktop PC's network. Now I'm only seeing the media server Minidlna. Currently I have no access from my desktop PC to the fvdw file-system. This must obviously be because I've (temporarily, to gain access to the NAS) divided-up my network between two routers having different DHCP clients.

Ought I to forget for now about installing the patch and firmware ver. 17, and instead restore my LAN configuration to using only one router (the Linksys) first of all?

Dear fuddyduddy you can find that in system management menu subpage LAN setup. I think that this is quite obvious, did you look to the different pages of the web interface??
Please read the help page for that webpage its very easy. I get the impression that you do not read the help pages and ask to easy. I am willing to help but asking these simple things is I think not necessary. Please study the help pages first before asking thank you.

About seeing shared folders, just type the ip address of your nas in explorer address bar
