Problems installing Firmware 17.0 on Network Space Max

Problems installing Firmware 17.0 on Network Space Max

Postby Matteo05 » Thu Dec 28, 2017 7:22 pm

Hi,

I tried to install fvdw firmware for the first time on my network space max V2.

I first of all removed one of the 2 drives (drive no 2), and only left with drive in slot 1.

booted via fvdw-sl-console and all worked fine, could access as root and launch fvdw-sl-programs

I then started the procedure to install fvdw-sl-firmware on a hard disk

I tried both options (with and without GPT option), as well as disk size greater and smaller than 2TB, but the procedure always ends in error when disk partitioning starts.

here's what I can find in installer.log file

selected nas type nwsp2 platform kirkwood
selected disk /dev/sda
gpt support bootloader selected yes
selected partion table type gpt
Deleting old msdos partiton table
deleting msdos partition succeeded

create new partiton table
create new GPT partiton table
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5

Problem opening /dev/sda for reading! Error is 6.
creating GPT partiton table succeeded
format partition 5
mke2fs 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
mke2fs-ext3: No such device or address while trying to determine filesystem size
formatting sda5 failed

The strange thing is that after above error I cannot see the disk any longer, for example using fdisk or gdisk. If then I unplug the disk and reconnect it then it's visible again; same if I reboot and restart the procedure from console.

I'm stuck...anybody able to help me?

thanks,
Stefano

Hi Matteo

We know the install script fails to handle rightly some very big disks (> 10TB).

Even if you do not use it, it seems you have the same failure.

I sent you a pm to test if with a new version of the script, you succeed to install our firmware

Thanks a lot Jocko!

it worked now with your new script!

I first tried using GPT; installation completed ok but at reboot did not get web interface, and led kept blinking red/blue.

I then tried with no GPT, and now the nas is up and running!

I would have expected GPT to be supported, as the used original Lacie disks are 2.009 TB diskis...

anyhow, will now continue with patching and installing second hard drive..

thanks a lot again!

gpt table is required only with disk bigger than 2TB.
AFAIK lacie sold nwsp max with 1TB or 2 TB disks. So to have gpt support with the boot loader was useless.

In addition to Jocko's comments. I think you have nwsp2 classic with a bootloader (uboot) that doesn't support gpt. This is a known issue and there is in the fvdw-sl console a possibility to upgrade the bootloader, but this makes only sense in case you want to use a disk bigger then 2 TB. So if you don't have a disk bigger then 2TB leave the bootloader as it is and use msdos partition table.

Furthermore be sure that it is a nwsp2 classic if you upgrade uboot and not a nwsp2 lite. As uboot for the nwsp2 classic is not compatible with the nwsp2 lite writing uboot for a classic to a lite will make it non functional. To determine which type you have read the sticky post in the nwsp2 forum were the difference is explained

Hi everyone,
I just tried to install the latest firmware on my cloudbox and ended with the same error.
Is it possible to have the script too ?
Thanks !!

PS: my drive is only 1To so after poweroff I tried to reinstall without gpt. The error in the console was the following :
Code: Select all
fdisk: can't open '/dev/sda': No such device or address
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
/fvdw-sl-installer-3-1.sh: line 404: arithmetic syntax error

More informations : installer.log contains the following :
Code: Select all
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ # cat installer.log
fvdw-sl-installer log
tftpd ip address 192.168.0.41
getting required programs from tftp server 192.168.0.41
Dialog installed
xterm installed
mke2fs-ext3 present
gdisk present
Start fvdw-sl firmware installer version 3.1

selected nas type cloudbox platform kirkwood
selected disk /dev/sda
gpt support bootloader selected no
selected partion table type msdos
Deleting old msdos partiton table
deleting msdos partition succeeded

create new partiton table
create ms-dos partiton table
max cylinder

and fdisk -l give me :
Code: Select all
root@fvdw-sta-kirkwood:/ # fdisk -l

Disk /dev/mtdblock0: 0 MB, 512000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 0 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Disk /dev/mtdblock0 doesn't contain a valid partition table

Disk /dev/mtdblock1: 0 MB, 4096 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 0 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Disk /dev/mtdblock1 doesn't contain a valid partition table

As I saw in the post : https://plugout.net/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2799,
I have commented some lines in fvdw-sl-installer-3-1.sh and the partition were succesfully created.
Thank you for your great job !!!
