How to properly cool LaCie Cloudbox?

How to properly cool LaCie Cloudbox?

Postby Cubytus » Tue Oct 31, 2017 11:51 pm

Hi there,

I have a 5700rpm HGST constantly running some low- I/O operations in a Cloudbox chassis, and it gets quite hot. I removed the top cover and it seems OK, but temperatures around 48 to 50 is not unusual. However I fear the hard drive is more vulnerable without a proper cover.

Question is, how do you manage the heat in a LaCie Cloudbox?

I have put my nwsp2 on its side. For the rest there is little you can do. Some connected a small cpu fan (gives noise). 50 degree is no problem for a harddisk. Our firmware has an option to activae a temperature guard that will shutdown the nas in case the disk temp exceeds a threshold temp

Sure, I appreciate this temperature guard finally being standard issue in fvdw, but is it normal the HDD becomes so hot in the first place? That's 48 to 50 with a bare drive...

It also dependent on the type hdd you use. The models running at 7200 rpm become hotter than the 5300 rpm models. Also how intensive the disk is used and ambient temp makes a difference. I fully agree that lacie should have foreseen a fan on this nas.
On the other hand as long as it stays below 50 oC there is no danger for your hdd

Slower hard drive (5700rpm), but constantly running. Are HGST drives hotter than others?
