One last question. Since i'm using a custom (?) kernel is it safe to upgrade to 16.1?

version 16.1 contains your kernel version.

So no issue to install it

Hi samrise

If you install version 17.0, this will be easy by using the new disk setup menu

Note: after upgrading to 17.0, you must install the last patch for version 17.0 to have a right sync speed when you will add the new disk in the raid

So install first version 17.0

Upgrade done!

My goal is to replace all 4 1TB drives for 4TB drives. I was going to do it using cli by replacing each disk at a time wait for rebuild, and then grow the array and filesystem. Is that possible using web access?

Hi samrise,

Yes you can do all steps from the web interface. With 4TB disk size, I assume you did not include sda8 on the current disk as 5big1 does not support a gpt table on the system disk (sda)

So you should do disk by disk, from the disk setup menu :
- open the raid volume menu (by clicking on the raid volume name link)
- remove a disk
- stop the nas
- replace the related disk
- start the nas
- initialize the disk (from the main disk setup menu)
- add the new disk in the raid

So only when synchronization successful , repeat all the steps with another disk.

When all disks are replaced, you should be able to extend the fs on the new raid size (from the raid volume menu).

! Warning: Do not try to do this last step without installing the last patch for 17.0

Yes, sda will continue to be a 1TB drive. One last question: How should the 4TB drives be partitioned before adding? No partitions at all?

- replace the related disk
- start the nas
- initialize the disk (from the main disk setup menu)
These steps can be done with an empty disk (Initialize step will create the partition table)

First disk is rebuilding atm. Still a long wait ahead of growing but can you tell me more specific where the grow option is available?

Grow feature is available on the edit volume menu when :
- volume type is a raid5
- raid status is clean
- at least one additional disk is available to be added in the raid and its size is at least the same as the component size used by the raid

Note: you do not grow your raid (you do not add an additional component in the current raid volume) but you change only the size of its components. So after replacing the 4 disks, raid size should be extended automatically but not the fs on the raid. It is why you need to do this last step.

About synchronization speed, what is the sync speed returned by
Code: Select all
cat /proc/mdstat
