Another Failed Drive

Another Failed Drive

Postby hvymetal86 » Fri Jul 21, 2017 12:10 am

So I'm back again :-( after only a month and 5 days since my last failed drive that I got help with here:
http://plugout.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=2700

I completely understand how to replace it and its much easier to do so now that I'm running the 17.0 firmware, but the reason for this thread is that the failed drive is the one I had just added as a replacement. I can always pull it out and test it in an external case or my PC, but I just wanted to check and see if there was anything I could look at in the NAS logs to see if there might be an issue with that drive bay or just for more information about what exactly the OS detected that made it mark the drive as faulty.

It wasn't a new drive but it was one that had been used w/o issues in a PC for a while and I tested it with Seagate's long surface test and found no issues before using it. Just want to cover all my bases here rather than just throw another drive at it.

Thanks!

In the disk menu there is submenu with SMART disk test that you can run. The output may indicate a possible problem

I do know about that. The NAS didn't initially show the failed disk sdc there, but after a reboot it does. Running tests and it passed the overall and short tests, in progress on the long one now. Prepping a different disk though, not sure I trust it even if it passes the long test.

Seems like this failure is more conclusive than the last one. The long self test failed with a read failure:
Code: Select all
==> WARNING: A firmware update for this drive is available,
=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
Short self-test routine
Extended self-test routine
SN = Sector Number Register [HEX]
Num  Test_Description    Status                  Remaining  LifeTime(hours)  LBA_of_first_error
# 1  Extended offline    Completed: read failure       90%     16915         588124168
# 2  Short offline       Completed without error       00%     16914         -
# 3  Short offline       Completed without error       00%     16023         -
# 4  Short offline       Completed without error       00%     13367         -
# 5  Short offline       Completed without error       00%        70         -
# 6  Short offline       Completed without error       00%        47         -

Replacement going in, no further assistance needed. Thanks!
