5Big v1 cannot get telnet to connect

5Big v1 cannot get telnet to connect

Postby billyjack669 » Fri Jun 23, 2017 1:19 pm

I have the newest firmware installer package downloaded, disabled extra NICs, plugged my remaining online NIC and the NAS (5Big v1) into a simple netgear wireless router (with DHCP enabled) and started the procedure with varying numbers of drives installed:
-1 drive in far left (this is my usual method of trying it)
-1 drive in far right
-1 drive in far left + 1 drive in far right
-all 5 drives connected

I choose the 5BIG1-45-standalone UIMAGE, then go to town.
UBoot does its thing, TFTP goes, I see some boot information, then the UBOOT closes, the main window says "waiting 15 seconds to launch telnet", then telnet pops up and eventually times out.

I've only tried varying the drives I'm putting in, all are of unknown data / format type at this time, with the exception of 1 that I imaged a LaCie .img to at some point over the past few days.

Do I need to wipe them in some manner before putting them in the NAS?
Any tips are much appreciated.

Hi BillyJack,

I am sorry but I do not understand wellwhat you want to do and also where is the issue:
- restore or not the lacie firmware or install our firmware
- what is the current state of your disk (empty or not; have already a partition table; ...)
- do you succeed or not to login on the telnet server

Note: when you use the standalone kernel, system is only loaded on the memory. So even without disk, you must get a telnet access.

I want to install your firmware.
I'm certain all the disks have some file system on them. Should they be blank? I was hoping I could wipe them / put correct data on them after getting your firmware loaded.
I can never successfully ping the IP address of the 5Big (although I'm not sure that I should be able to).

I understand from your last statement that I must get telnet access from this scenario, but I do not.

Again, here is the procedure I have run through:
(Before anything, I disable all NICs except the one I have plugged into a network consisting of my PC, a netgear router, and the LaCie. The netgear router is providing DHCP. My IP address is set statically to 192.168.1.251, the LaCie is 192.168.1.252. The router is 192.168.1.1.

1- I start the console app, choose action > install fvdw-sl firmware.
2- Go through the prompts, choose UIMAGE-26394-5BIG1-45-standalone firmware.
3- UBoot starts, I switch on the LaCie, UBoot connects and uploads (I see tftp's transfer window and the command window showing the upload), the unit boots, then the window closes out.
4- the console says "waiting 15 seconds" for telnet.
5- Telnet opens, then times out.

That's all that happens.

Thanks for your assistance!

Hi Billyjack,

Indeed you made an error:
- xxx.yyy.zzz.251 and xxx.yyy.zzz.252 are used by fvdw-sl console for the NAS. So your laptop must have another IP.

This is important with a 5big1. So you need to install the fvdw-sl firmware on the left disk (when you look at the back side) and keep empty the other slots.
For the next step, you need first destroy the partition table on the other disk and do:
- stop the NAS
- plugin the additional disks
- start the nas
- go to the disk setup menu
- click on the button "Initialize disks..."
