Network Space vs2 keeps crashing - fw 16.1

Postby KarZan » Sun Jun 26, 2016 6:45 pm

Hi

I am new to this fw and started with version 16.1. I was fed up with the original firmware and started looking an alternative and you might have already guessed I found one :)

I love fvdv-sl but it seems I have some kind of problem. The whole nas seems to crash on heavy load. I mean I can easily reproduce it by selecting lets say 500 files and then deleting them. Also when opening a folder with a huge number of files it crashes. I would say that every time my nas will crash. It reboots it self. Might have something to do with heavy network trafic when the deletion is done by the host computer. I can easily delete a big bunch of files with a command line while using ssh.

So my question is how would I go and troubleshoot this? Is there some log or something to look for? The /var/log directory does not seem to contain any useful info.

I am though wondering if the problem is hw based. I am not sure but I suspect I had some crashes with the original fw but it could have been fw related :)

Did you enable the temperature guard?.
Because there is no fan in the nwsp2 the temperature mightcget too high under heavy load and warm days. For that reason we provide a temp guard that switches off and reboot the nas when it exceed the threshold temperature set. You can set this option in the disk menu. I always use 55 oC on a nwsp2 and I put it on its sude as that reduces the cpu and disk temperature as well

I did not. I did though think of setting it when I first istalled it but then thought to see how it works without it and then forgot it :) I can not look at the temperature right now because I swithed the nwsp2 off due to morning thunder. There are occational drops in the power here while thundering and I am planning on building a simple "UPS" for it :)

Also I have planned (even before fvdw) on adding a small fan to the box due to the warming.

Thanks for the hint. I have to check if I did set the temp guard anyway :)

I double checked the temp setting is not enabled. The max temp ever on the drive is 59 oC.
So it is not the reason for the nwsp2 to reboot.

Any other suggestions?

I accidentally changed ownership of wrong files ending in not being able to log in to shell :) Anyway I had to reinstall everything. At he same time I added a fan in the box keeping the temperature down. After adding the fan there has not been any crashes. So at least my NS2 seems to heat up so much that it crashes without extra cooling. This is more or less the problem I had with it before with the original fw.
