Use a wired connection between your laptop and the LAN, disable your firewall or grant the programs the console uses acces to your lan, your pc will ask this permission , use only one active network interface on your pc. So if you have wireless and wired interface disable the wireless adapter

Does the uboot window actually shows uploading of the kernel and does it mention "starting kernel" before it closes?

In the telnet client does the enter username request automatically appear ?

Did you try to use the connect button in the telnet client when it has timed out, on systems with a disk problem starting the kernel may exceed waiting time of the telnet client

I should try with a disk less to find the culprit?

No that won't help. It seems your pc blocks traffic on the telnet port (23)

Other possibility you selected the wrong standalone kernel
What device do you actually have? A 5big vs1 needs another kernel then 5big vs2 (=kirkwood)

so I try a new ms windows, I just install the lan and disable the firewall, even result on testing numerous auto1 the window closes before the end of loading the kernel.
I've got the message kernel started only once yesterday, but could not connect has telnet. :dontknow

I replaced my five discs by two blank discs, the 5big net2 working properly (this is a version sold without drives) and have access to the dashboard.

It remains only to find a solution to retrieve my data. :thinking :dontknow
