Your problem with the second router not discovering then nas hostname might be that router is not in the same workgroup.

If it finds it but displays a weird string then it can only be character set or a problem in your router to convert the info received. It is a standard protocol to broadcast host names if the devices in your lan exc/ept the router can display the name it must be an issue with your router (that very likely will have linux running)

Call me ignorant, but I don't know what it is…
I never paid attention to that. Perhaps because it seems like a Windows-only requirement, and there's only one Windows computer here. There are no workgroups that I know of, or maybe an implicit one.

This modem-router runs, I think, a Linux-like OS, but heavily locked down to prevent users from messing up with VDSL profiles.
The other (old) router runs an old Tomato version, not dd-wrt as written below.

My network map, if that helps:

In your LAN map, router IP seems to be 192.168.1.1 where as previously I read "Lynksys-router : 192.168.1.2" or I wrongly identified it and lynsys-router is WRT54GL but in this case its IP is 192.168.2.1 :thinking

You are correct. The Linksys doesn't play any major role here and only stays there for performance reasons for the few 802.11g devices remaining.

Ok so that means WRT54GL has as IP 192.168.1.2 in the main net and 192.168.2.1 for the WIFI subnet.

Try to connect directly your cloudbox on the router to check if it is not a switch issue

No more success:

I also restarted fvdw for good measure.
I doubt a switch would ever go bad. They have no configuration or firmware and are often guaranteed for lifetime, so how would they go bad?

The 192.168.2.1 is a 802.11g-only subnet, used by the iPhone 3GS, PowerBook G4, and by my neighbor.
