Lacie rebooted. I am in the web server. Obviously red light is blinking in the front, since I am down 1 disk.

Is next step to add Disk4?

:-D

Indeed, now the best way is to use the Lacie web-interface to include the new disk in the raid5.

Note: as I don't use the Lacie web-interface, I can not help you for that.

Ran out but will do that when I get back home.

I'm also sure the firmware in this NAS hasnt been updated ever. I think it was 1.3.

Everything looks good. :woohoo

I added the disk and in the webserver said to use the disk and the raid rebuilt/sync'd overnight. Everything was good in the AM. I updated the Lacie firmware in the Webserver without an issue. I created a backup job in the lacie to again backup the data to one of the WD drives. Want to make sure this process works, since I want to leave a WD hooked up at all times for backup purposes. What was strange was that the music I copied off that had accent marks or Asian letters and the ones that came through as the gibberish in the directory names and file(song) names. However, when viewed on the Lacie it appears correct. That is also why I am curious to see what happens after the lacie backup, although I am not sure if the files are accessible outside of the Lacie. Another reason I want to see what appears on the backup drive.

This one is more for fvdw, but what is the difference between the Lacie firmware and the fvdw firmware? Or why use one over the other? If all goes OK with the backups, I hope to get this back to my friends and hook it up and make sure all is good with his Sonos and that everything works.

Just want to Thanks both of you, Jocko and fvdw, cause without you guys he would have been screwed. :hail :hail :hail :hail :hail :hail :hail This forum is awesome. Will definitely be making a contribution to keep this forum going. Will let you know if all is well after hooking it back up.

Indeed, filename are encoded uft-8 on the Lacie whereas Windows uses cp1252 charset. So if a filename contains some not ASCII characters, the filename won't be rightly displayed on your laptop when you browse the backup directory.

This is a long story: at the beginning (2008), fvdw had wanted to improve the firmware on a small NAS (SPD 8020) as it offered not many features. Later, after succeeding to implement this firmware on another Lacie NAS (nwsp1), it appears we can implement it with a few changes on several Lacie NAS.

Why we use our own firmware: just to be free to do what we want with our NAS...

:punk glad to hear that you got it back working

and addition to jocko's answer to use fvdw-sl firmware. it has several features that you won't see in lacie's firmware. Just have a walk through here. explore fvdw-sl firmware
That link gives you an impression of version 16-0, the latest version has some new additional features, see change log in announcements

But the most important feature is as Jock says we can add anything we like to the firmware.

Be aware that there are only the two of us to develop and support this firmware, so we can not do everything in short period, we have to make choices
