Help needed with upgrading firmware

Postby Fuddyduddy » Mon Jun 01, 2015 7:12 pm

Hi

I've downloaded and unpacked xfvdw-sl-16-0-nwsp2-30dec2014.bin I've then tried to use it to carry-out a firmware update via the web interface menu -> Firmware Update -> Lacie-Firmware. Having clicked on "Start step 2" I got the following error:-

"Firmware upgrade step 2 started...
Firmware upgrade failed, upgrade process aborted, reason:
fw upgrade could not unpack firmware package, not a valid format"

Can I please have some guidance as to how to overcome this glitch?

EDIT

Having realised that one of the three downloaded .rar files was anomalous (different date - ditto the.bin file) I deleted all three, downloaded a fresh, matching set and extracted correctly-dated .bin file. Then tried once more to carry-out the fw upgrade. This time I got this error:-

"Firmware upgrade step 2 started...
Firmware upgrade failed, upgrade process aborted, reason:
fw upgrade MD5 check failed firmware image is corrupt"

seems you have a download problem, corrupting the files during download
There is an updated version for 16-0 nwsp2 posted by Jocko with date 11 apr 2015, where did you get the 30dec2014 version from? it is no longer present in the download section :scratch

Download is here
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2024#p16825

but to make it easy for you I have sent you pm message contining a tested package, check you pm inbox

I don't know if this is significant but, having happened upon it, I thought I ought to report it in case it's relevant to the problem.

I use 7-Zip as my unzip program. Just out of curiosity I chose from its context-menu "Test archive", and applied this to each of the .rar files in turn. File 1 tested OK but both 2 and 3 brought up the attached response.

Please send me the files you downloaded from my pm in a new pm to me. In this way I can check if they also fail on my pc. If this is the case then something in your dowload process must cause this. We have seen in the past similar problems for users with a poor quality internet connection. Or when using ftp connection witout using binary transport setting.

In response to your request I've been trying to upload the files so as to attach them either to a pm or to this reply-post. Both have failed, repeatedly.

All that happens after I click on 'Add the file' is that the progress-bar window comes up and cycles endlessly. Nothing at all gets up-loaded. If I let this go on for any length of time it shuts down this message-posting panel and anything I've typed into it is wiped!

I don't know what's going on, nor how to deal with it.

Any ideas. please?

Hi Fuddyduddy,

I think that is your zipper the issue. it seems that 7z fails to unzip split rar files.

To confirm my idea:
* I downloaded again the rar files (version 11par15) from download forum.
* unzip the rar file with winrar without problem
* upload the bin file (step1)
* and I got no issue with the step2:
the upgrade script succeed to unpack the bin file, in /tmp folder:
unpack.jpg

and also the other steps:(check step)
check-step.jpg
and before rebooting
succeed.jpg
.

Note: I upgraded twice my nwsp2 to check the old upgrade script and the new script. In both case, I got no issue :scratch

Jocko's test proves that the files are ok. Because also uploading fails I think that your internet connection is the probleem. We saw similar problems in the past with other users with slow internet connection, when we did not split up the files. For that reason we split them up. Maybe they are still to big for your connection. I will sent you a new package with smaller files to see if that solves your problem.
