samba related developments and upgrade

while looking to the smbclient program I noticed that samba 3.6.1 could increase performance, currently we are using 3.0.24 in our firmware

The First Free Software SMB2 Server

Samba 3.6 includes the first Free Software implementation of Microsoft's new SMB2 file serving protocol. SMB2 within Samba is implemented with a brand new asynchronous server architecture, allowing Samba to display the performance enhancements SMB2 brings to Microsoft networking technology.

Samba's new SMB2 server has been tested by major vendors and has been able to double the performance of some network applications when run in conjunction with Microsoft Windows 7® clients.

Future developments of our SMB2 server and client suite, in combination with our expanding number of SMB2 tests, will keep driving the performance improvements and improved compatibility with Microsoft Windows that Samba users have come to expect from our softwar

I was able to compile it for ARM platform used in our NAS devices :mrgreen: :ugeek: but the binaries are huge, total samba will be 125 MB :shock: Uur current version is below 20 MB. I don't know if the nwsp1 and spd8020 will benefit from it, they may even be not capable to run those big binaries, but our nwsp2 and isp1 should be capable to use it.
Will be on the list for future improvements

ps smbclient 3.0.24 is on this moment included in fvdw-sl-10-0 but if you try to use it and query a windows 7 PC running window live program it will fail. Its a known problem and solved in samba 3.6.x but as said those binaries are huge. I am trying to patch 3.0.24 to get smbclient also working with windows7 PC. We will need in future release the smbclient program to search the LAN or internet for a sever running Samba and to list the shares it has.
edit this is solved in fvdw-sl-10-1 there a patched version of smbclient 3.0.24 is put in that can communicate with PC's running windows 7

This is good news. I have given up with the NFS sharing since it's too unstable. Samba is working better but a bit slower.

@firewareslut
Agree that this nfs server is not very stable, but here we are dependent on others that write that software.
we will see if we an further improve it
just out of interest what speed did you get with the new nfs server in 10-0 ?

I was getting around 40mb/s but then it hung up for ages before moving onto the next file. I suspect it could be an issue with fuse rather than the nfs binaries. It's almost like it is filling up a cache and goes very quickly and then transferred the disk at the real speed.

The biggest problem for me though is that instability of the share. Often I cannot shut the computer down properly and if the share hasn't dismounted cleanly and is accessed from other clients they often don't connect until I restart the NAS. Samba as proved more reliable in that respect.
