Samba problems?

Samba problems?

Postby matigev » Thu Nov 17, 2011 3:43 pm

I got some problems accessing a share with multiple computers simultaneously.
The login windows just re-appears. It's not always, just 2-3 times a day.
I got Windows XP clients. Someone has any ideas?
I used different user names and the same user names, that doesn't matter.
It looks like it happens when accessing the share at the same time.

Maybe it has something to do with this?

I have seen this on my PC when I used windows XP in the past, I moved on to windows 7
The problem occured when logging to shares using different user names and passwords, seem XP is remembering the last one you used and use that again when trying to open it. Or it uses the one under which you looged in in XP, if that doesn't match with one set for the share, or if that user has no right to access it then also this problem can appear. Removing the network connections using the extra menu of explorer (NOT internet explorer) can resolve the problem.
I never had it in windows7 so I guess it is an XP issue

Unfortunately I manage around 40 Windows XP clients so upgrading is not an option. It's low-budget.
The weird thing is: it looks like its happening random. I don't map the network drive, because the user has to give user credentials for security.
My setup is as follows:
2 share, shr1 and shr2
shr1: 2 users with R/W (btw, can they write/edit files written by the other user?)
shr2: 3 users with R/W, 1 user Read-only (this acc is used by 8 clients)

The problem occurs with both shares. The users access the share with a shortcut on their desktop to \\nwsp2\shrX
It works after reboot, but sometimes just 15 minutes.
That certainly looks like a windows xp issue, but it's weird that it only happens when multiple clients are using a share.
I thought it maybe had something to do with my smbd.conf. I used the web-interface for setting up.
Maybe users need to be grouped or something? I can post smbd.conf.
Is their any way to get a log from smbd?
Thanks for the help!

shr1 question, yes they they can.

reboot of the XP computer i assume. Do they loose access while connected or when trying to access it for second time ?
As said XP seems to like to use previous used credentials. If a reboot of the xp computer helps its for sure an XP issue.

yes there is a smb log file but to access it you need to access the NAS via SSH (for example by using Putty)
Its in /var/log/samba

ps why not give each user a username ? using multiple computers with same username may make the NAS confused (I think)
I give users the same name and password on the NAS as they use to lo on on their windows PC to start windows.
