Does that kernel have some special requirements? I have a uImage without initramfs, build from GPL sources, here.

No, that way of installing does not work (yet) for the V1 boxes.

Instead you should do the manual installation.

If the box doesn't boot, with a disk prepared as described, you could try the attached uImage.

--edit fvdw, file deleted as it was corrupt due to forum back problem

no, not very special requirements, the usual stuff. Like support for ext2/ext3 and ntfs file system and ntfs upto version 3. The firmware will try to load some modules for usb support but of course will fail. But perhaps in your kenrel they are already in. It will also try to load a module for iscisi target but that will need a dedicate compiled kernel module using the kernel header files.
A test will tell if your kernel has all we need.

To take away possible confusion:
I guess taetae means a raw dump of the first part of the disk, containing the partition table and system partitions. My kernel is not suitable for that, of course.

ah I see

I made a setup file for the 5big1 based on 2big1 setup and using the GPL info on differences between 2big and 5big as posted by mijzelf.
The compiler is running now to produce a first 5big1 kernel based on linux 2.6.39.4
Hope I mapped all gpio's correctly.
If the compiling goes well I can add an initram file system and produce a standalone kernel that can run from RAM..
That could make live easier as then using the fvdw-sl console will give you access to the box

ps the kernel setup doens't contain a configuration for fan control, probably it will be always runnings for the moment.
Also I miss the gpio for usb port 2 (does the 5big1 has 2 usb ports or not ?)
Last e-stat ports, not sure if these will be enabled
Also still need to figure out to include sata multipliers in the kernel config (guess same as 5big2)
