I cant thank you enough for all your help! You guys are awesome.

I just have one more question. I want to add sda8 to the the array. I have used gdisk to create partitions on all other disks. Should i use gdisk on sda also?

About your question, no you can not use gdisk for sda. See one of my earlier posts. The bootloader of your 5big1 doesn't support gpt partitions, only ms-dos partition tables. If you use gpt on sda it can not boot with this bootlader. You could consider upgrading the bootloader but that is a risk as you need to write a new version of u-boot to flash memory. If it fails then it will be difficult to repair it.

I still wonder why it works now an the other user failed also when using 3.14.2 kernel. Maybe the gpt partition table did the trick.
I am not a raid expert, Jocko can advise if sda8 can be added asit is using the ms-dos partition table of sda

Ok, lets wait for Jocko and see what he has to say. I'm happy as it is anyway!

Hi samrise,

I don't know if you can include gpt partitions and ms-dos partition in the same logical raid.
But you can do a try.

Code: Select all
root@nas:/ # mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sda8
mdadm: add new device failed for /dev/sda8 as 4: Invalid argument

But i really dont feel like smashing my head all over again. From what i searched online i have many doubts its possible. It should exist a way since lacie firmware supports raid also.

Hi guys,

i read this post so, since my nas still not working, i tried to create a raid 1 with 4 disk (2 active and 2 spare). No problem with the raid 1, then i tried to convert to raid 5 and still no problem, but when i tried grow up the raid5 with the fifth disk i got the same resync low speed that i got earlier, and the nas hanged.

Could it be a problem with raid5 and 5 disks?

i used a fresh fvdw-sl-16-0 firmware installation, i crated raid1 using your guide and then i followed this http://blog.scott.wallace.sh/2007/04/co ... -data.html)
