Lacie 5Big2 Failed After Firmware Update

tip

you can open a second telnet client in fvdw-sl console and connect once more to the 5big2
Then give the command
Code: Select all
top

This will show you what it is doing and what keeps it busy

seems gzip takes most of the cpu time

Code: Select all
Mem: 507820K used, 4652K free, 0K shrd, 436284K buff, 7076K cached
CPU: 74.0% usr 23.4% sys  0.0% nic  0.0% idle  0.1% io  0.0% irq  2.3% sirq
Load average: 1.08 0.60 0.25 2/44 828
PID  PPID USER     STAT   VSZ %VSZ CPU %CPU COMMAND
  819   721 root     R     1456  0.2   0 79.4 gzip
  818   721 root     S     2244  0.4   0 18.0 dd if /dev/sda8 bs 1M skip 950928
  258     2 root     RW       0  0.0   0  1.7 [kswapd0]
    1     0 root     S     1232  0.2   0  0.0 /bin/sh
  716     1 root     S     1232  0.2   0  0.0 /sbin/telnetd
  721   716 root     S     1228  0.2   0  0.0 -sh
  820   716 root     S     1228  0.2   0  0.0 -sh
  828   820 root     R     1224  0.2   0  0.0 top

<snip>

You can leave "top" by using CTRL+C

with using the command ls -al /mountpount/* you can see if the file still grows and how big it has become in the meantime
It seems to grow on my system with approximate 1 MB /minute as it is a compressed file I have no idea how far it is in the process of copying and compressing 60 MB

Thanks! I should have thought of that myself! Honestly, I'm just really afraid to mess with the drives too much and within this whole process because I really can't lose this data.

Strange. Mine says SWAP is taking all the CPU:

I can imagine your feeling, walking around with a stone in your stomach. Hopefully we can repair it...we will see, there is still hope

you can give command
Code: Select all
ps -ef | grep dd

to see if that command is still running.
I think you have filled up the RAM with a file, remember the kernel and linux file system is in ram. If the output is not written to the usb disk it is written in ram.
This will happen if the usb disk is not mounted on the mountpoint
The command
Code: Select all
mount
should list which partions are mounted and where they are mounted

In 5 minutes, the file size hasn't changed at all:

Code: Select all
root@(none):/ # ls -al /mountpoint/
total 494328
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root             0 Jul  9 20:45 .
drwxr-xr-x   14 root     root             0 Jul  9 17:53 ..
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root     495304704 Jul  9 20:51 sda2_end.gz
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root      10884716 Jul  9 20:44 sda2_start.gz

ps the standalone kernel has no swap space on a disk so it can't free memory by swapping.

Check if your usb disk is mounted correctly
Code: Select all
mount

if mount doesn't show that /dev/sef1 is mounted on /mountpoint then you have filled up the RAM...no problem but not the intention

PS you can abort the dd command by using CTRL+C in the telnet window were you started it

so it is not mounted

The files are written to RAM in the folder mountpoint

delete them
Code: Select all
cd /mountpoint
unlink sda2_end.gz
unlink sda2_start.gz

check that the folder is empty now
Code: Select all
ls -al

Go back to root folder
Code: Select all
cd /

Mount /dev/sef1
Code: Select all
mount /dev/sef1 /mountpoint

(check if it is mounted by giving the command mount without arguments, it should now be in the output that you get from the mount command)

if it is repeat the commands to copy the partition end and start
