[SOLVED] Cannot mount remote Samba share

Re: Cannot mount remote Samba share

mmm...some reading on the internet refreshed my memory
we use a recent kernel on the nwsp2 (2.6.39.4) that uses cifs filesystem (smbfs can not be selected anymore, deprecated)
If your router still uses the deprecated smbfs file system in the samba server then this could be the reason but I am not sure.

The MSHOME workgroup is set in the NS2 as well as in the router.
The nasusb disk is a NTFS filesystem.

Today I tried to attach that disk directly to the nas (host mode), but it couldn't be recognized. I suspected that the NAS had a problem in recognising anything attached to that USB port, but I didn't try to attach a usb pen-drive, for example.

I will try now, and will also retry attaching the external hard disk. It takes me a while, as the NAS is stored in a non practical place, I need a ladder to reach it
I will let you know in a while.

Hi, without changing any default USB setting on the NS2, in particular without creating any disk image, I tried to attach an external pen-drive on the front port of the nas, but it seems it's not recognized.
I cannot see anything in the DISK SETUP menu, in the USB section.

The same happened today when I tried to attach the external disk.

Now I tried to attach to the router the pen-drive, it's FAT32. I shared it, but it works exactly like the disk, when I use MOUNT on the NS2, it says "No such device".

:dontknow sorry but then I don't know a solution right now. I think the problem is a to old linux setup in your router not supporting CIFS but still using SMBFS

ps when connecting an usb disk to the front port connector you should see a shared folder appaering in the list but also when accessing the ns2 with explorer to view the share.

When you connect the disk to the usb port you should see the blue led make some flickering.
Also be sure the setting for usb is set to "host" mode

If it is not recognized this can be in case the "label" given to the usb disk contains spaces or characters like ' or "
The "label" you can view and set when attaching the usb disk to a windows computer and open properties windows

Ok, thank you for the suggestions.
I'm pretty sure the disk label is just "MDI", but I will check further. I will also test further about connecting the external disk to the front port, like suggested.

The router was bought this year, 2012, so I expect to be quite updated also in its firmware, which I updated immediately after installing it. But I will keep on testing, as I really would like to schedule an automatic backup of my NS2 to this external HDD.

Thanks for supporting so far!!

Cheers,
Marco

ok Marco

You could try to mount an external share from a windows PC on the ns2 using the add remote share feature and see if that works ok. If that works then it is pretty sure theat the problem is with the router

ps Although the router is new it is new it can still have an older linux kernel. Its not so easy to make a linux kernel for hardware and once developed they keep using it and only add features to it and bugfixes of software in firmware upgrades. The fact that it reports samba 3.0.22 also indicates that not all software is from recent date..
But of course I can be wrong

Hi fvdw,
I made another test. This time I used a home machine running Linux Mint 12 (updated) to mount one of the NS2 NAS shares. It worked.

But I also tried to mount the router share from that machine, and it worked too.
Then I tried to mount a share of the home linux machine from the NAS and I got again the "No such device" error.

I am doubting that the samba version of the NS2 is actually outdated or not fully functional, as an updated Linux box can mount any share I find on the network, router or NAS, while the NAS samba client cannot mount from the network.

Still confused about that....

I also tried to use MOUNT from the NAS with the -f flag, just to run mount in fake/dry mode, that is, as I understood, without actually doing the mount, just simulating it.
It gives no error, as it was successful.
Without that flag, I receive the "No such device" error.

The syntax of mount seems quite old.

Is it possible to update the samba suite in the NS2?
