1) Download fvdw-sl Console 5.5 correct.
2)Re-install all the current drives back in the Lacie is the original order. (i.e. way it was when crashed)

Install all original disks, when assembling the raid array you wil see which disks fail
3) Connect a LAN cable from port 1 to my router. Leave NAS powered off.
4) On the XP machine run FVDW-sl console

yes correct
but next step should be after startint the console
5)choose action and "standalone kernel load and start"
6) follow the instructions in the popup window, select the correct standalone kernel (UIMAGE-3142-NWSP2CL-KIRKWOOD-24-standalone)
7) wait until the a command window opens mentioning "waiting for u-boot"
8) after that start your nas
In the command window the text waiting for u-boot should change, can take several seconds, 5big2 bootloader takes its time, if it change you will see in the command window the uploading progress of the kernel and starting of it.
Then the command window closes automatic and after about 12 seconds a telnet client is started and you can try to login.

Now do I need to be on a specific lan for this to work? My IP address scheme at home is 192.168.17.x. If I need to I can find an older router and set that to 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x if necessary.

Yes but that is done in the fvdw-sl console, see main window, it will also show the ip of your PC
You can change the default value if you wish but I would leave it unless the ip spefied for the nas is already in use in your lan.
Note, be sure that the first three octets of the IP are corresponding with those used in IP pool your router is using (for example 192.168.1) typically choose them equal to the three octets of your PC's ip address.
Of course your router must allow access to the ip addres used

I found the following thread: http://plugout.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1574&p=19386&hilit=raid5+repair#p19386

I uploaded mdadm

I did the following command I saw in the thread:
mdadm --assemble /dev/md4 /dev/sd[abcde]2

I got the following error:
mdadm: /dev/md4 assembled from 3 drives - not enough to start the array

I then ran:
mdadm --examine /dev/sd[abcde]2

Here is the output:

I expect Jocko will give you some advice, he is the raid expert around here. :-D
But 2 devices not ok will be difficult...lets wait for his reaction

Ps regarding our first discussion, you see that your lan port is ok ;)

Hi imt17,

Not sure you have 2 fail disks (sdd2 and sde2). It is amazing but sde2 has a clean status in your last output so mdadm should use it to assemble the raid :scratch
But maybe it refuses to do it as its events value is not the same than the others. Strange because with a small offset (4), mdadm should not reject the device :scratch

So what is your output for sdd
Code: Select all
fdisk -l /dev/sdd
or
gdisk -l /dev/sdd

And try to assemble the raid by excluding sdd2
Code: Select all
mdadm --assemble --force /dev/md0 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 missing /dev/sde2
if it is ok post the content of
Code: Select all
cat /proc/mdstat

fdisk gave me:
fdisk: can't open '/dev/sdd': No such file or directory

gdisk game me:
Problem opening /dev/sdd for reading! Error is 2.
The specified file does not exist!

Think that drive is dead since it makes like 3 buzzing noises like its trying to activate when NAS or individual drive is powered on. I had nothing when I pulled that drive and tried looking at it on gparted on the linux systemrescuecd using a usb to sata adpater/dock. No drive found.

When I ran it I got the following errors from mdadm
mdadm: /dev/sda2 is busy - skipping
mdadm: /dev/sdb2 is busy - skipping
mdadm: /dev/sdc2 is busy - skipping
mdadm: cannot open device missing: No such file or directory
mdadm: missing has no superblock - assembly aborted

So that means that you already assembled the raid as md4 exists.

But good news, sde2 does not a fail status :-D .

So now try to mount it. if its fs is ok you should be able to mount it.

Still I am not sure if version 5.5 contains it, you can try to use the binary available in this post viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1574&start=40#p19163

If you look back 5 posts, I had run the following command:
mdadm --assemble /dev/md4 /dev/sd[abcde]2

Not sure if I jumped the gun or was a mistake. That is when I ran the -examine and posted that output. I don;t know linux so will need steps to how to do things.

not sure how I go about mounting it (i.e. don;t know linux). But, also didn't want to do anything yet since I wasn't sure if maybe the raid should be unassembled and then reassembled per the command from your previous post? Don;t even know if its possible but wanted to verify anyway.
