Hi! Some general question + Wifi USB Realtek RTL8191S

I removed my modifications from insert-modules and moved it to rcS before "# rcS finished". This because I got some error messages showing that insert-modules is too early in the booting procedure.

rcS mods:
wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -B
ifconfig wlan0 up
ifconfig wlan0 inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

This is my wpa_supplicant.conf under /etc/wpa_supplicant/ :

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=root
update_config=1

network={
ssid="XXXXX"
scan_ssid=1
psk=xxxxxx
proto=RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP
group=TKIP
}

Remark here: I set GROUP to "root" instead of the usual "net devs" because root is defined on our nas. The key after psk and the SSID is of course deleted. psk can be the clear key in letters included in "", or it can be an encrypted key without "" generated by wpa_passphrase, which I used.

I found that /etc/network/interfaces is not regarded by the commands in use, so there is no need to discuss it.

Still a thing to solve:

At the moment wlan0 needs a manual IP assigment through ifconfig inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx . Then is has a valid IP. however I need to obtain a lease with udhcpc which gives another IP. The connection works when these two IPs are identical (adjust it with ifconfig). Even when I try to obtain the same IP that was assigned by ifconfig, by means of udhcpc -i wlan0 --request xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, I do not get the requested IP. Eventually this could be a router issue giving always the same IP to known MACs.

Al least it seems that udhcpc and ifconfig are not compatible. Would it be possible to store the IP obtained by udhcpc in a variable and hand it to ifconfig?

I read very few cases with similar problems with udhcpc. Is is possible to have dhclient and try it?

It is in fact an original Realtek 8191SU-GR. It does not show up in the web interface. In dmesg I found a line which is likely related :
[ 9.599231] usbcore: registered new interface driver r8712u
Do we need vendor and product ID?
I could connect it to my Ubuntu Desktop PC and find out.

this is set in the kernel
Code: Select all
CONFIG_STAGING=y
# CONFIG_ET131X is not set
# CONFIG_USBIP_CORE is not set
# CONFIG_W35UND is not set
# CONFIG_PRISM2_USB is not set
# CONFIG_ECHO is not set
# CONFIG_COMEDI is not set
# CONFIG_ASUS_OLED is not set
# CONFIG_R8187SE is not set
# CONFIG_RTL8192U is not set
# CONFIG_RTLLIB is not set
CONFIG_R8712U=y

in your dmesg output it mentions it loaded the R8712 driver, so you would expect that it should be working.
let check vendor en product id. You can see it in the web interface under the menu attached devices -> usb devices

about the message in dmesg, thats there because it is part of the kernel. So nothing to do with your dongel.
We need product and vendor id to find the right driver needed for this one, as said if you plu in the dongle youshould be able to see it in the web interface
