Blown capacitor rating

Firstly, hello and thanks for accepting me onto this forum. I have an old Lacie Network Space 2 (Neil Poulton design) that I've been retinkering with. It's been unreliable/quirky (not remembering date/time, sometimes not coming online etc), so I've been increasingly thinking I don't have much to lose by attempting to hack/update it (hence leading me here). But after removing the HDD to mount it locally and possibly clone it, I noticed a blown capacitor. Thus any firmware/update tinkering would likely be moot.

I'm even unsure whether it's a Lite (let alone a Classic) as the layout doesn't even seem to resemble a Lite. I might try to replace the cap, but I'm trying to work out what spec it is. I'm attaching photos. It seems to be specced at 2.5V and seems to be fat enough to be a 1uF, but can anyone verify?

Having done more research, it turns out 1 F is a plausible rating after all (I always thought that was pretty monstrously big), but it could be right for smoothing out power fluctuations? I don't have any that capacitance, but looking online I'm seeing lifetimes quoted of 1000 hours at 70 degC. This seems crazy short. 41 days being powered on?? I appreciate this is a software/firmware forum, but anyone got any experience/knowledge of these LaCie circuits?

Hi

Why not for a challenge but it is not a network space 2 classic or lite but only a network space. See the site: https://jestineyong.com/lacie-1tb-netwo ... as-repair/. You will find information about capacitor
But think it is really a not powerful nas with RAM size 16M. Several function of fvdw-sl firmware can not be used with this RAM size!

Ohhh! Thank you so much. I don't know how in my head I started calling it a Network Space 2, possibly because very little seems written about the original now, and I suppose I figured the Neil Poulton design was a single version.

I've removed the blown cap and will replace it. I'll update here how well the unit behaves after. What other upgrade options are there for this version?

Hi

Lacie firmaware updates did not provide new features but only to lock some user tricks to get for example a root access.
Some years ago, you were able to find some tricks on the net to have a root access. Maybe you will find them on some archive sites.
