Slowly and finally it works like a charme.
In my opinion the performance of this NAS is absolutely at the limit. The bottlenecks are known (CPU, RAM).
The webinterface is reacts slowly and copying files isn't fun at all.
So I only use it as Audio and Photo storage.
What is your application for "grandma" SPD8020 ?

To be honest..I do not use anymore. As you mentioned its limited RAM makes it slow certainly when having more then 1 application running.
I have a question on 2big2.
Can you determine which disk is in which slot, I means is sda in righthand slot when looking at the backside or lefthandside ?

If you look from behind, the left disk ist disk 0
In this slot in installed your firmware on a new disk.
See also here, counting is from left to right, on 5big2 as well.

yep that is what I had in my memory as well
but the 2big2 of ded_kiev
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1798&start=40#p14303 seems to be different :scratch
He had not the original u-boot bootloader of lacie inside but the one from lacie-nas.org, maybe this is the case that it assigns different bus numbers to the slots
ps the link you attached show a screenshot from the dashboard there it show from right to left but that is a screenshot o the webinterface and not necessary anything to do with actual position when looking at backside...confusing

Strange. My FW install was on the left slot as far as I remember (looking from the back). The right slot remained empty.
But I read the FW install ran successfully. Is that right ?
My SPD8020 has retired, too. So, I'm looking for a reasonable purpose to avoid scrapping it.

ded_kiev's 2big2 has a non standard boot loader !
But I doubt if that makes a difference in assigning bus numbers. For me it is not logical to assign sda (in the boot loader) to the righthand slot.
if you disks have different size or brand it is easy to trace them in dmesg output. But as we use a diskmap sda and sdb will always be assigned to bus
bus 0:0:0:0 will be sda
bus 1:0:0:0 will be sdb
(this is the same as in lacie firmware)
Interesting to know now is the following "is 0:0:0 the righthand slot or the lefthand slot" ( seen from the back)
on ded_kiev 2big it seems to be the right hand slot, while on yours it seems to be the lefthand side slot
A way to find out is to boot it with only 1 disk (in the lefthand slot) and see if in dmesg now only scsi 0:0:0:0 is found as sda
The only difference between the two is the boot loader. I have difficulties to believe that on ded_kiev's 2big2 the sata cables are connected differently then on your device. But it is possible to switch them

I still like both my Grandma´s :bananadance
I use my grandma SPD8020-1 for my Movies/Series storage and use my other grandma SPD8020-2 to store my Music/Flac collection.
Both 1TB and its still ideal to mount them as extra disks to my Linux system.
Also on my SPD8020-2, I use the Minidlna server to stream my music to my tablet and phone. Works perfectly!
Dont salvage your old grandma! Send them to me...with or without HD, I love them!! :please
