Samba 4 on fvdw-sl

We succeeded to implement samba 4 (version 4.8.3) on fvdw-sl.

By setting a basic configuration, system files size is enough small to be included in the firmware image (27MB instead of 110MB with a standard configuration).
On next version, you will be able to choose between the current version (3.0.37) and this upgraded version 4.8.3.

Badly, this feature won't be implemented on tiny platforms (nwsp1 or SPD 8020): samba 4 requires too much memory for these platform types.

SMB2 or SMB3 protocols may be used with your samba client such as Windows 8 or Win10. We added also an option to disable SMB1 (but you should keep it enabled if you have old samba client like 9x, XP,... Vista)

SMB3 allows to improve read speed (max: 55-60MB/s) and sightly write speed (max: 18-20MB/s)

Please to note performance is still better with version 3.0.37 if you need to use SMB1.

since I had success in setting up a raspberry pi as an active directory domain controller I am interested to connect a fvdw NAS as client to the active directory.
By setting a basic configuration, system files size is enough small to be included in the firmware image (27MB instead of 110MB with a standard configuration).
I hope the basic configuration is big enough to allow this.

Hi uelpenich

I am sorry but we have disabled this compile option

I noticed SMBv1 is not installed by default in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update so I had trouble connecting to my NAS share using Windows 10. I had to enable SMB 1.0/CIFS Client under "Windows Features".

Samba 4 will be a welcome update.

Indeed it will be a major change for win10 users.

Currently for these users, it is not so easy to get a samba access on the shares set on the nas after a first install :
- set the right workgroup on the nas ( this is required for all windows OS versions)
- and as you wrote it, enable smb1 on the laptop

So not handy.

Currently I think some new fvdw-sl users (win10) failed at this step.

Would vfs_fruit be supported? I cannot access anymore my Time Machine share with MacOS Mojave, and I suspect it is due to AFP deprecation. Time Machine over SMB needs this module. Any idea on when this would be available? Thanks!

Hi

I am sorry but this feature will not be supported with this samba version 4.8 and we need to reduce the required disk size.

Hi

At the end, we found a way to increase the firmware partition size.
So we go to try to implement vfs fruit support on TM shares.

Please to note samba 4 feature will be available only for donator members

Hi Jocko,

also good to know that AVM Fritzboxes (well known IADs in Germany) support now SMB3 in their (Labor) firmware release.
It's about future changes recently. Win10 sets the rules :)
