Problems with tabs y Time Machine

Problems with tabs y Time Machine

Postby treybal » Sun May 16, 2021 12:51 pm

Hi friends:

First of all tell you that I use a Mac Book Pro with the "masOS Big Sur" version. 11.3.

Well, I write in the forum because I have two problems:

1º) When I access the console through the IP of my "Lacie cloudbox (white casing)", I cannot access the tabs of each menu, for example, I click on "System Administration" and if I click on the tab "Status of servers", I can not access. And so with all the tabs of all the menus. I don't know what is happening because before I could.

2º)I'm having trouble backing up with "Time Machine".
I have read the forum and it seems that the solution is to install this patch:
download/file.php?id=6742

I'm right?.

If so, I have a question regarding the second comment in the "Note" section, because says:

How to install the patch :
- Save the attached zip archive in the file share 'fvdw'[1]
- Go to the upload patch menu of the web interface
- Select the file in the first field (click on the small button "...")
- Put in the second field (control code) the following code : "unzip" (without quotes)

Note:
- No nas reboot is required
- you have to install it only after installing its roll-up patch (currently patch02)

How do I know if I have the "roll-up patch (currently patch02)" installed?

If I had to install it, where can I download it?

Thank in advance,
Treybal

Patch02 you can find here https://plugout.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3149#p34522

If it is already installed you can see in the file upload window of the web interface.

That you cannot acces the tabs of the web interface is peculiar. It might indicate a corrupt file. Does this problem also occurs on other web interfaces pages with tabs?

That patch https://plugout.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3149#p35540 is not for your device and not a solution for the problem you describe.

Hi

About tabs issue, I assume it is this known bug
Firmware web-interface:
Affected device: all nas
Affected version: all version
...
feature: Tabs box
Bug: with Safari browser, tabs do not work (no tab swapping on mouse click event) as soon as you use version 14.0 (more detail: https://plugout.net/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=3449)
So with patch02, it should be also fixed

Hi friends,

I have installed the patch and the tabs issues and Time Machine issues are half gone.
I explain:
On an iMac with iOS MacOS high Sierra version 10.13.6 everything is perfect, the tabs work fine and the backups in Time Machine too.
But on a Mac book Pro with iOS Big Sur version 11.3.1. neither tabs nor time machine backups work fine. In Time Machine, the disk is recognized but the capacity does not, it only appears a capacity of about 147 kB and that is not true. :thinking
What could be happening ?, Is it a problem of incompatibility of the iOS Big Sur with your firmwire ?.
Thanks in advance.

Hi

I succeeded to virtualize a BigSur on my windows host and all seems to work as expected.

So I use BigSur version 11.3.1, on the nas side I set a TM share 'EssaiTM2' and of course use samba4 (samba3 does not support this feature)

I can create a first snapshot and TM creates a 2d snapshot at the planned time :
$matches[2]
2d_snapshot_ok.jpg

Confirmed also on nas side with the file "com.apple.TimeMachine.SnapshotHistory.plist"
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
   <key>Snapshots</key>
   <array>
      <dict>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotCompletionDate</key>
         <date>2021-06-15T11:51:07Z</date>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotName</key>
         <string>2021-06-15-135107.backup</string>
      </dict>
      <dict>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotCompletionDate</key>
         <date>2021-06-15T12:52:05Z</date>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotName</key>
         <string>2021-06-15-145205.backup</string>
      </dict>
   </array>
</dict>
</plist>

So that seems not to be an issue with our firmware

Do you notice on BigSur, apple set a new environment for TM and you have to set a new fresh TM disk?
Other point, you can not use a same TM disk for several hosts (which was possible until the OS Catalina) but set a TM disk for each host! Then you have to create different TM shares on your nas for each mac hosts.

Tonight, version 11.4 will be installed and then I could check the feature with the latest version

So I tested version 11.4 and it fails... BigSur can not connect again to the remote TM share.

I understand what happens and the issue was already present on version 11.3.1. There is a bug with samba version 4.9 and newer on arm platform:https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13622
On samba log, you notice it
Code: Select all
[2021/06/15 21:31:34.865634,  0] ../source3/modules/vfs_fruit.c:6924(fruit_tmsize_do_dirent)
  fruit_tmsize_do_dirent: tmsize overflow: bandsize [268435456] nbands [21]
[2021/06/15 21:31:34.866304,  0] ../source3/smbd/dfree.c:125(sys_disk_free)
  sys_disk_free: VFS disk_free failed. Error was : Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
With this error the share is no longer available and no connection can be done (you can see it with Finder where you can not open the TM share but without issue the others if they use the same user account)
By disabling the TM size limit in samba conf file, you can reuse the TM disk
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
   <key>Snapshots</key>
   <array>
      <dict>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotCompletionDate</key>
         <date>2021-06-15T11:51:07Z</date>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotName</key>
         <string>2021-06-15-135107.backup</string>
      </dict>
      <dict>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotCompletionDate</key>
         <date>2021-06-15T12:52:05Z</date>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotName</key>
         <string>2021-06-15-145205.backup</string>
      </dict>
      <dict>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotCompletionDate</key>
         <date>2021-06-15T19:51:31Z</date>
         <key>com.apple.backupd.SnapshotName</key>
         <string>2021-06-15-215131.backup</string>
      </dict>
   </array>
</dict>
</plist>
So 3rd snapshot successful after removing the TM size limit.

I need to talk with fvdw if we release a patched version of samba 4.9.4 or release a newer where the bug is already patched

Note this bug was also present with Catalina and surely with older MAC OS versions (as soon as Afp protocol is no longer supported)

A new version (4.10.18) is available for samba server to fix this issue.

Good morning friend Jocko,

First of all, thanks for replying. In relation to the link that you indicate, I have a doubt when you say: "and install the new version 4.10.18 by clicking on the related button", because I do not see the related button to install the new version of samba

Hi
What firmware version do you have?

On version 18.x, when a new samba version is available, there's an install button in the tab AFP/samba server of the system setup menu.
Of course your Nas must have an internet access.
