Connect NAS directly to PC or via router?

I've seen some conflicting information on the forum regarding this: Is it supposed to work to connect the NAS and the PC to a router when installing the firmware, or do they need to be connected directly? I can't get any option to work (can't get pass the u-boot step), but it might also be that my NAS is faulty. Shortly after connecting the power the LED shows a steady red light, so there may be something wrong with the hardware..

OK, so I succeeded in connecting to the NAS by disabling all the network interfaces except the wired LAN and can confirm that it does work to connect the NAS and PC to a router and assign the PC's IP via DHCP. I.e. you do not need to connect the PC and NAS directly with a fixed IP on the PC.
However, when writing the firmware I get an input/output error so probably I have some hardware fault somewhere. Will try with a different hard drive..

Thanks for sharing your experience. Indeed disabling all except 1 wired can be necessary.
About i/o error, when the installer script is running at which step(s) do you get them?

Sorry, didn't see the question until now. I don't quite remember, but it was when initializing one of the partitions. But I replaced the drive and all is working perfectly now.
