Hostname incorrectly displayed in the modem

Hostname incorrectly displayed in the modem

Postby Cubytus » Mon Mar 28, 2016 4:19 am

Call me a perfectionist, but I noticed the hostname given to my LaCie Cloudbox is not properly displayed in my modem:
What I see:

What is set:

To my knowledge, only fvdwsl-base firmware and a linux-powered iDrive NAS have this issue… In the Finder left pane however, the name is correct.

The rationale is, I often go to the modem DHCP assignment page to check IP assignment.
What is the source of this issue?

what happens if you change the name?
The only thing I can think of is that your router expects another character set because of the language set. The kernel only supports a few of those character sets.
You could test if you change the language setting of you router to english if that makes a difference

It makes no difference if I change the name: still doesn't display in the modem's page. But I thought all hostnames were limited to ASCII character set. The router doesn't have any other language than English, though, and only fvdwsl and another weird Linux-based NAS have this issue. Since the other doesn't have a reference website, better ask here.

Hi Cubytus,

What happens if you use a static IP. (If you use DHCP server, information are encoded UFT-8 by the client).

Note: In my opinion, it is a firmware issue of your router (charset issue of the web page)

No change if I assign a very simple hostname ("jj") and set the IP to fixed IP. The router does assign fixed IPs according to MAC addresses (Static DHCP), but only three devices can't display their hostname properly in the router, and as we say in democracy, "the minority is always wrong" :D

The IP phone doesn't provide a hostname (I think that's intentional, as most advanced features have been disabled),
iDrive provides the same hostname as fvdw, so I don't think it's a coding issue. By the way, when I need to restart the modem because VDSL sync is lost, the displayed hostnames are different, but always a combination of two characters.

I tried to switch the character coding of the webpage, but it doesn't change anything. The modem web page doesn't specify a charset in its source code.

Sorry, but I have no more idea.

If you have another router, you may do a try to see if you have the same issue.

Tested with another router: the NAS simply doesn't appear, and doesn't resolve its hostname on the other router. All other computers sharing it have no issue, though.

Sometimes it might take while until it shows up, it depends which device is the master browser in your lan. That device is sending a list of clients connected to all devices in the network.as long as the master browser doesn't update the list it won't appear.
Has nothing to do with the firmware on the Nas.

To test if your device is known on the network use the nas hostname instead of IP. If that works the issues you have caused by your lan and not the nas.

What is a "master browser" exactly? The DHCP server? In which case the second router was, as is the current modem-router.

In any case, I left it connected for 20 minutes at least, and I know this router displays new clients in a few seconds at most. Its hostname didn't resolve, no new IP assignment appeared.

On the regular modem-router, the hostname resolves, gets correct static DHCP IP, but hostname incorrectly displayed in the modem.
Exactly like this other iDrive network HDD: hostname resolves, gets its assigned static DHCP address, but displays the same string as the fvdw in the modem, which is kind of weird and not consistent with a simple charset error.

That's the only issue so far with fvdw being correctly displayed.

fvdw wanted to say "master host"
