Slow Network Copy

You have done a great job with fvdw its really just great thank you a lot for it

however I just came to notice that after installing fvdw on my cloudbox network copy speed to and from the lacie has dramatically dropped from 40 - 60 MB/s to 20-30 MB/s i am running on a gigabit network cat 6 cables everything is fine nothing changed yet on the original firmware I was able to transfer data at speeds up to 60MB any suggestions ?

thats interesting until today I didn't see these speeds, the cloudbox has a cpu that is even slower then of the 5big2 and that one doesn't reach 60 MB/s on a gigabit LAN, typical cloudbox is comparable with a nwsp2 and that reaches about 25 MB/s.

I believe that the original firmware uses XFS as we use etx3 filesystem but that will not explain the difference you describe

so how reliable is the figure you mentioned :scratch ;)

(reading of a large file could be faster, but writing will never achieve the speed you mention)

Its very reliable .. as I copied over everything on my cloudbox to my desktop before going through with the installation of fv software

and throughout the entire copy the speed never dropped below 48 MB/s it fluctuated a lot bu never below however when copying my data back onto the cloudbox I didn't really pay much attention to it although I noticed that it started at 24 MB/s to 31 MB/s but thought that it might be due the fact that its writing onto the cloudbox not reading but as time passed I came to notice it

So you tested the backup write speed on your PC and not the backup write speed of your Cloudbox :shocked

yea Jocko, but now when I try to copy the same data off the cloudbox its copying at a much lower speed ... as mentioned earlier so I thought that I'd post it here and see if someone else has noticed it or if its just me

If I am not mistaken thats the black one not the white casing is it possible that Lacie ran a few improvements on the white casing ? or am I just confused ?

Another point with your last post: did you note what was the samba version used by the Lacie firmware?

IF you click on specs you'll see that the cloudbox white processor should support up to 60 MB/s which is not the case anymore any ideas ?

as explained earlier, I think that speed can only be reached at ideal circumstances (spec is upto 60 Mb/s). For writing it will never be reached and also not for copying small files. Large files written to sequential blocks on the disk may give higher speeds. but in relaity disks always ahave some fragmentation and that makes fille reading and writing slower.
On my 5big2 which has a 1.2 Ghz processsor speeds are not higher then 40 Mb/s and on a nwsp2 with a 800 Mhz processor quite similar to cloudbox it reaches max 30 MB/s. We us ext3 as file system, using xfs might give some improvement but never an increase tot 60 Mb/s.
I also noticed that the newer kernels seems to have more overhead and are slower, reverting to an older kernel like in the lacie firmware could also give some improvement but you will loose compatibility with newer software that needs a more recent kernel.
