HDD temperature reached in LaCie Cloudbox, safe temp?

Hello there,

I saw two temperatures limiter in fvdw firmware, one being 50, the other 55. I wanted to know what was the usual working temperature of the Cloudbox drive when it's active, and what is an abnormal temperature.

Rationale: we all know hard drives don't like heat, and that some get warmer than others, especially faster models like the 7200rpm installed in the Cloudbox.

The SMART parameter shows the highest temperature reached in the disk's lifetime was 58 degrees, dating back before I got it in exchange for a printer. Currently, the LaCie lays on its side so as to give better exposure to the grill underside.

55 degree is save for any HDD. (check the spec for operating temp's)
Some people like to be on the safe side and use 50 oC as threshold to shut it down.
But for certain disks this can be too low, especially the 7200 rpm disk, causing frequent shut downs in summer time
If you have a green disk running at 5300 rpm you could consider to use 50 oC.

Thanks, since the Cloudbox is original, it comes with a Seagate 7200rpm. But the shutdown wasn't graceful: it just interrupted transfers without warning.

Update:

This HDD has a safe operating temperature of 60ºC max. However, fvdw firmware reports current temp at 54ºC. IT still feels too close for comfort of the 55ºC upper limit where a HDD can be shutdown. How reliable is this function?

Edit: hum, now it seems to be reaching 56…

Would it be possible:

• for the fvdw firmware to set a timer before shutting down the disk? This would allow for lengthy transfers to complete, temporarily going over a safe temperature for a limited period of time.
• To set a threshold temperature arbitrarily? Let's say, 55 in winter, but 57 in summer?
• Or at least have the option to receive an email alert instead of brutally shutting down the disk?

Sure, but allowing half an hour or an hour before shutting down would present the whole operation to be started again,

That's what I meant, being able to set up an arbitrary value.
However, even there, I am not sure at all this NAS was made for lengthy transfers since it shoot past 60 degrees during a 2-hours transfer. :(

Indeed it seems much cooler, at 53º. However I think the drive is a bit vulnerable without its case don't you think?

In the next version you will be able to select a max temperature between 50 and 60 °C.

I checked the feature, this is already available. But of course, you need to enable email notifications to receive an email.

Just tried to set up the email alert system, it takes a very, very long time to report success on sending the test message, yet it never arrives. Spam filter on the receiving end has been disabled for the test. The fvdw interface reports "error" without any additional info.
