Reinstalling Firmware v18.3 without deleting previous backup

Reinstalling Firmware v18.3 without deleting previous backup

Postby macintosh » Tue Nov 11, 2025 1:17 pm

Hello.
I'm having a problem with my 2Big-NAS, which already has Fvdw-sl 18.3 installed, it no longer restarts correctly.

My previous Fvdw-sl 18.3 installation used the automatic procedure with fvdw-sl-console and install fvdw-sl firmware, following it step by step...

Being rather new to this, I'd like to reinstall Fvdw-sl 18.3 but without erasing the partition where my data backups (created with Fvdw-sl 18.3) are already located.

Your help file, install_fvdw_sl_firmware_hlp, doesn't provide instructions on this.

Could you please provide the steps to follow?

Thank you for your help.

Hi

From firmware update menu, click on the button "Update firmware (latest version)' . You will get a new fresh version 18.3 even if version 18.3 is already installed.

Of course you will need to install again the patch for version 18.3 later

Hi Jocko
Thank for fast answering.
Yes, I know that.

But I can't even get to the Fvdw-sl 18.3 interface!
The 2Big-NAS doesn't boot completely, the front button just keeps flashing blue, and that's it!
The HDD lights are OK (fix blue)!

Thank

Hi Macintosh

Ok

Do you sill have a shell access ? From a shell terminal, we can try easily to reuse the former installed version

Otherwise, we can install version 18.3 via fvdw-sl without losing your data but less easily

Hi

Ok that means the boot script fails to run the php commands...

So we go to use fvdw-sl console to write again the firmware image on the system partition in-use.

Start fvdw-sl console and select as action "Standalone Kernel, load and start". For a 2big2 you have to select as kernel image : UIMAGE-3142-KIRKWOOD-171-standalone

When you get the telnet access, run
Code: Select all
mkdir /sda7
mount /dev/sda7 /sda7
cat /sda7/boot.log
You must read a line like "booting using sda1 file system..." or with sda2

note what partition is used by the boot script

Then run
Code: Select all
umount /sda7
 fvdw-sl-programs
from the new menu, select "write fvdw-sl firmware image to disk"

Answer "yes" for the partition that you noticed at the previous step ( and only for this partition)

Then writing is successful completed reboot the NAS by entering
Code: Select all
reboot -f

If your nas database is not corrupted, nas should restart sucessful

Hi Jocko

It's perfect, everything's back to normal. Apparently... :dontknow

Can you give me more information about this (see my first screenshot)?
The indicator for disk #2 is still red for now! (30 minutes after normal restarting).

I did some tests with just one disk :doh

But in the RAID details, only my disk 1 appears!! (see my second screenshot).
Perhaps this is normal (status in_sync), the re-synchronizing of the two disks...

My backup data is accessible from my machines.

Thank you again.

Hi

Nice !

Indeed as long as redundancy is not restored disk 2 (sdb) is not listed but led status is not correct. When redundancy is rebuilding, front led and led slots should be red+blue blinking.

Can you post
Code: Select all
cat /proc/mdstat
