5Big2 freezes and drops off network sporadically

Postby hvymetal86 » Mon Aug 22, 2016 2:48 am

I'm using a LaCie 5Big2 with 2TB drives (3 original drives, 2 replacement Toshiba HDs) in a RAID5 configuration (clean status). Current firmware: 5big2 fvdw-sl 16.1 patched
Patches detail:
2015-05-19 08:30:21 fvdw-sl-16.1-afpfix-remoteshr-11oct15.zip(fvdw-sl-16.1-afpfix-remoteshr-11oct15.tar) OK

2016-08-20 12:33:11 fvdw-sl-16.1-USB-fix-17feb16.zip(fvdw-sl-16.1-USB-fix-17feb16.tar) OK
Schedule servers (No patch, ran command via SSH): viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2326#p22197
2016-08-20 12:42:52 fvdw-sl-16.1-samba-patch-25-mar-2016.zip(fvdw-sl-16.1-samba-patch-25-mar-2016.tar) OK

When not accessing files on the NAS or only light duty copying to and from my computer it will stay running indefinitely. However sometimes when I stream video from it after a while it will suddenly drop off the network. After the HD lights blink in a few patterns (the large front light remains blue) all the drive lights go out and only the lights on the network port are still on (steady, not blinking). The only way to get it back is to shut it off with the switch and either leave it off for a few minutes, or pull the plug, turn the switch back on for 10 secs, turn the switch off, plug back in, turn on.

When I've gotten back into its control panel shortly after recovering from this I have never seen the RAID unhealthy or rebuilding so I don't think that's the cause but I'm lost as far as what to do other than connect via SSH and start going through logs randomly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This seems to be a forced shutdown of the nas. This could be caused by the the temp guard daemon. Did you activate the temperature guard? When it is set to 50 oC it might be the reason for the shut down. We found that the cooling fan daemon might fail to keep temp below 50 oC.
If you have set it to 50 oC change it it 55 oC to see if your priblem goes away. In the next versuon we will include an improved fan daemon.
The temp guard can be found in the hard disks section of the web interface.

Thank you for your help! I do have it on:
Code: Select all
Current setting:   enabled, temperature limit 55 °C, WOL enabled / Standby time (20 min)
Here's my disk temp data:
Code: Select all
Disks temperature status
Disk   Status   Current temperature   Max temperature   Max temperature ever reached
sda   active      39 °C               50 °C             51 °C
sdb   standby     43 °C               53 °C             56 °C
sdc   standby     48 °C               56 °C             62 °C
sdd   standby     44 °C               53 °C             56 °C
sde   standby     41 °C               51 °C             53 °C
So it looks like it could have been going over 55 as well at times. I've adjusted it to 58 °C and will see if this helps. Might need to move the NAS to a cooler spot in my house though.

Hi heavymetal,

if after a reboot you want to see a disk temp history, you can use this command
Code: Select all
smartctl -x /dev/sda
(for example for sda device)

Thanks Jocko! I'll use that if it happens again with my new temp settings or even just for troubleshooting if I want to drop the temp settings back down and experiment.
