Hello,

First, excuse my english.

I may be purchase a used Lacie Network Space without its hard drive but first I would like
to know if it is compatible with your alternative firmware :
The seller says it is a Lacie Network Space EK

I will plug in it a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1Tb.

Thanks per advance for your help.

Hi mapomme1108,

Lacie Network Space EK is a network space vs 1 (not vs2).

So it's an obsolete device with poor performance ! Don't buy it or with a low price (<<30€ without its disk !).
I advice you to search other offers with nwsp2 and compare their price.

And indeed you could install the alternative firmware ;)

thanks for the quick reply Jocko

the price is low (= 35 euros) so I don't know what to do

do you know the spécifications of the device :

Sata I or II? IDE?
Gigabit Lan or 10/100?
USB 1.0 or 2.0?
To summarize, what are the rates in usb and ethernet?

does the alternative firmware of the vs1 have the same functions than the alt. firm. of the vs2?

On the nwsp1 speeds are for reading 10 MB/s and writing 6-7 MB/s ! :dry :dry :dry
and only 16 Mb RAM.

So you can only use nwsp1 for one job at the same time...

It doesn't use Gigabit Lan but 10/100 Mb.

I have a nwsp1 and a nwsp2 and now I use only nwsp2 (nwsp1 only for backup)

ok

so it is not enough for me because I want to do backup but also multimedia streaming (HD videos for example)

for information, what are the reading and writing speed with the nwsp2?

transfer speeds depends on many factor, if you transfer small or big files and if you have a gigabit LAN and if may applications are active or not, or more then one user is active.

I can reach typically 25-30 MByte/s for reading and writing large files like video files , reading is faster then writing.
If you read or write 1000 files of 1 MB then this speed will not be achieved and will probably be lower then 5 MB/s due to need of writing file headers and so on to disk for each individual file.

ps nwsp1 also has a gigabit network interface but due to limited RAM and slower cpu it will never be faster then 10-12 MB/s
The nwsp2 has much more RAM but also a faster cpu 800 Mhz instead of 400 Mhz. When writing many small files transfer speed will drop below 1 MB/s

below a screenshot showing performance of the nwsp2 when reading and writing a file using samba server of the nwsp2 from using a windows 7 PC (explorer)

But as said transfer rates are dependent on many factors and can be lower as result of that then shown in the graph (no guarantee ;) )

ok thank you

if I buy one, the nwsp2 will be plugged on a gigabit switch with two computers which have gigabit lan too.

so, normally, it should reach 25-30 MByte/s for reading and writing large files and streaming HD Video

another questions : is there a newsreader installed with your alternate firmware?
is the LaCie Network SPACE MAX NAS 2To compatible with the alternative firmware?

(1) no there is no newsreader installed
(2) no, not on this moment, the nwsp2 max has two disks and our firmware is designed for single disk NAS

ok

and is it possible to wake and/or shutdown the nwsp2 from the internet (for FTP access)?

shutting down is possible from internet, waking only if you are able to send a magic packet to the nwsp2 in your LAN that is shutdown in WOL node. if it is behind a router then it is as far I know not possible to sent a magic packet from internet.
And yes it has FTP (even FTPS)
