Clone Network Space 2 disk to Network Space Max?

I've got
  • a Network Space 2 with a 2 TB WD Purple running fvdw-sl 18.2 and
  • a "new" Network Space Max with 2 TB WD Red and 2 TB WD Blue running LaCie firmware.

I would like to have the same fvdw installation on the NwSp Max, say on the WD Red. The WD Blue should just be additional storage, not mirrored.

  1. Can I just take the disks out, clone Purple to Red, erase Blue, and put the disks back in?
  2. Does the system disk (Red) belong in the upper or lower slot?

P.S. I know cloning all data also sounds wasteful, but a lot of that would actually be of use for the new NwSp 2 owner.

Thanks!

We have made a script that can clone the system disk of your nwsp2 to a disk (= the clone disk) connected to front usb port. For that you will need an usb/sata interface to connect the clone disk to your nwsp2 usb port. After cloning you can put the clone disk in the nwsp2max. I think you should use lower slot. I see if it boots. If it does boot shut it down and put second disk in upper slot and see if nwsp2max still boots. If not reverse the disks, put lower in upper and upper in lower slot.

Do you have an usb/sata interface?

Oh, nice! Yes, I do have a (powered) USB/SATA adapter, so that should work. Since the nwsps only have USB 2, maybe I'll take the disks out and clone on my PC anyway.

My main concern was whether a clone would be compatible between NwSp 2 and Max. So according to your answer, it is, or at least it's reasonable to try.

Also thanks for the slot / single disk first tip. I'll try that.

Indeed cloning 2TB via usb will take a long time. If you can do it on your PC it will be much faster.

That worked like a charm. To whom it may concern, this is what I did, if I recall correctly:

  1. Take disks out of the NAS;
  2. clone disk with two USB/SATA adapters (using Macrium Reflect Free Edition on my Windows PC); that took a little over three hours;
  3. put one of the clones back into NwSp 2 and test it; this works, obviously;
  4. shut down NwSp 2;
  5. put the other clone back into NwSp Max (lower slot) and test it; this works, too;
  6. give NwSp Max a different name (System Management -> LAN Setup -> Network Settings -> System Name);
  7. remove all partitions from the other (WD blue) disk using Windows Disk Management; leave partition table type at GPT;
  8. shut down NwSp Max;
  9. add disk to NwSp Max (upper slot);
  10. click Disk Setup -> Setup -> Manage Disks and Volumes -> Reset; format with GPT / Ext4; confirm "(re-)start the setup task" (?);
  11. click File Share -> File Share Management to create a share.
