Flash uboot to get GPT on NS2 is it that dangerous?

Flash uboot to get GPT on NS2 is it that dangerous?

Postby raidsm » Fri Oct 09, 2015 11:01 pm

I don't seem to find a good answer but is that risky to flash the uboot to get GPT feature?

I would like to use my 3TB HD located in my TC but as the NS2 doesn't support GPT out of the box I'm hesitating.

Anyone has a positive experience flashing the uboot on the NS2? :thinking

Hi raidsm,

:scratch Do you mean fvdw-sl does not support GPT usb disk ?

Yes of course since several version it supports UB disk with GPT partition table. But according with the fs on the partitions some ones can not be mounted.

flash uboot changes nothing about usb support.
And yes there is always a risk to flash an eeprom but up to now all members had succeeded to do it even if he flashes his nwsp2 lite with a bootloader for nwsp2 classic

In addition to jocko's post.

If I understand well you want to replace the current disk in your nwsp2 by a 3 TB one. To use full capacity you need to use a gpt partition table on that disk. If that is what you want to do and you have a nwsp2 classic with old bootloader then you need to put a new version of uboot in the flash memory. If you have a nwsp2 lite then uboot already support disks with gpt partition table.
As numerous persons have done a succesful flash I would say it is safe to do, of course if the power is cut during flashing then you will be in trouble, or if you upload a corrupt file. The fvdw-sl console does a md5 checksum test to check the file.

If you want to use a 3TB disk via usb then there is no need to flash uboot. The kernel of fvdw-sl supports gpt so also disks mounted via usb with gpt partition tables

I did the GPT U-boot update with my classic NS2 and it went well.
Read the manual properly and do it step by step.

The content on the existing HDD remains the same and is readable after the update.

Oh great then I was hesitant because I wouldn't reinstall everything but as you said it seems there is no downside of flashing. I will only gain the possibility of using a hard disk bigger than 2 tb. I will try this later today and post a feedback

That's correct.

Your existing HDD is untouched and reamins read-/writable.

Good luck !

Piece of cake.

Thanks you guys it took about 5 minutes everything went well.

I can now try to use my TC 3tb hard drive in the NS2 and put the 1tb noisy NS2 drive back in my TC as a backup. The TC drive never spin unless you are accessing a file so the noise would't be as much as irritating.
