Strange sound/noise - hard disk fault?

Hi,

I have a problem with my new Lacie Network Space 2 and would be pleased about some hints:

I'm using the current official firmware and everytime the hard disk is idle running, it makes a strange sound (short squeaking) periodically every two minutes or so. I suppose it's every time the reading head moves to stand-by position. Apart from that (reading/writing) everything sounds okay.

The hard disk also sometimes makes a strange sound, when the LAN cable is connected.

Here's a sound file (2 seconds pause between each part):

1. The sound i'm talking about.
2. Connecting LAN cable and similar strange sound at the same time.
3. Reboot sound.

Should I return the NAS or are these common sounds?

I don't know because I don't want to open the device due to guarantee reasons. Is there are way to check what disk is inside by software?

yes there is if you run our firmware.
But you can open the black cover without voiding the warranty, as long as you don't break the seal used on one of th screws that hold the hard disk
To open just pull at front side the cover with your nail and lift it.

my barracuda also makes some sounds when coming out of standby or when starting up but not every 2 minutes or when connecting a LAN cable
I would return it

Thank you. I'm going to return it. LaCie support gave me the same advice, too.

Got a new Network Space 2 now, but it makes the same sound. It's a Seagate Barracuda inside and I found out, that a new firmware for the hard disk could help. Is it possible to connect the hard disk itself via S-ATA to a windows pc and to do a firmware update from seagate?

Here's some information about the Problem: http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda- ... d-p/161356

And a short summary in german: http://www.heise.de/ct/hotline/Zirpende ... 47106.html

I had the same with my Seagate. The firmware update will help you.
I did the update unassembled from the Lacie housing directly connected to my desktop PC SATA controller.
