15.1 and External USB disk docking station

Hi mdi,

I need some time to read fully your last posts.

But do you test this
You could also try to change a system value.

After mounting the disk, what is the value in /sys/block/sdb/queue/max_sectors_kb (or with sdc).
and try to change the value (check if the disk is always mounted) with these one:
Code: Select all
echo 120 > /sys/block/sdb/queue/max_sectors_kb

Try values : 120, 64, 32

Currently, you still have a read-only mounted disk with a write-protect option because previously occurred an I/O error. It's why you can not remount the disk.

Hi Jocko, the returned value is 120. I didn't yet test changing that param.

If I'm not wrong, the max_sectors_kb should be less than or equal to max_hw_sectors_kb, which should be 120 too, but I will re-check tonight at home. I don't think it's worty to use smaller values than max_hw_sectors_kb, as it will probably increase the number of logical I/O?...

Putting 64 in that parameter (max_sectors_kb) didn't affect.
I now saw which are the messages written in the /var/log/messages:

So, it seems that the system (in my case it's a RPi now) is not able to wake up the disks once they are in standby.
Now I need to check if it's a RPi problem and if the same happens with the NAS.....

P.S.: Any comment on the Docking Station offer? :)

Hi mdi,

Currently, I don't have many free time and so I have not you yet answered... Thank for your offer and Yes I am interested by it... So see you later about it

About your last error in syslog file, I found a similar issue with a usb3 disk on internet and they solved it by changing a system value for the usb-storage driver.

So try this:
Code: Select all
echo 5 > /sys/module/usb_storage/parameters/delay_use
Note: after each booting, you must set again the new value (currently the default value is 1 '')

Hi, I'm testing with delay_use=10 now on the WD Red disks.

I'm really confused as I still have the same error below. The funny thing is that I run a backup script and I got the error almost immediately, but after 7-8 files.
Then I run the backup again and it started working. It copied several hundreds of Mb, maybe a few Gb, then again the error.

Code: Select all
rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes to socket [sender]: Broken pipe (32)
rsync: close failed on "/share/1000/192.168.0.148-smb-data1/mdi/Backup_Acer/D/SAUER/.DatiAvanzamento.mdb.Z09SLQ": Bad file descriptor (9)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(752) [receiver=3.0.9]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (77890 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(605) [sender=3.0.9]

So apparently this is not related with the data or their size/quantity.

The disks are ok even when checked by e2fsck and now they are MBR ext4 (no GPT). :thinking

No errors within dmsg at this time. Only later (maybe 15/20m later), I got this in dmsg:
Code: Select all

I found the initial reset message, so, I tried to "ls" one of the disks while those errors started to appear.
Above is the full list of messages I got.

I'm thinking of using a dd if=/dev/zero all over the disk and format again. Do you think it could be a chance to have it working?

Well, I don't think so because your issue is not the disk itself but how the disk is handled by the usb driver.

So need to search on this side

Hi, today I decided to brang everything in the office and I got the same issue.
I now know for sure that the disks creates issues when spinning down, that is after 15m. At that moment, the event is recognized in dmsg with some messages (already posted in previous posts).

Then I connected the RPi to 1 disk only, with a USB-Sata cable. You know what?
It worked! :rock
I've never been disconnected once in the whole afternoon since I connected it. I tried to wait for the disks to spin down and then run the backup again. I'm not sure if they spinned down, as they are very silent. But doing the same tests with the docking station, it didn't work.

So I just wrote to Inateck to ask them what they know.
In their FAQ I just saw that they know that the disk can be disconnected even while transferring the data and their solution is to change a probably defective USB cable! :laughat
I'm using the brand new cable provided with the docking station.

Keeping on testing...

Hi Jocko,
I've been able to update the docking station firmware.

They pointed me to the site http://www.springrain.eu/driver to download the appropriate one for my device (Inateck FDU3C-2_JMB551 Patch)

Actually I also found an updated version of the same firmware, directly on the site, which unfortunately is only in German language!...
On the page http://www.springrain.eu/downloads you can take Inateck FDU3C-2_Patch, among other related SW (for Win).
I installed this one.

Unfortunately it still doesn't work. Same issue as before.

Hi mdi,

Indeed test this device takes time..

Yesterday evening, my first task was to understand why only one disk was mounted ... (same behavior after upgrading its firmware)

In fact, I used 2x3TB disk and it seems that the docking station handles only 2x2TB disks even if I read in
Product Description that its maximum capacity is 2x4TB  I find a clue with the firmware upgrade program where it handles disks until 2TB size...

Now with smallest disks, both are mounted.

Otherwise, I also got one time where a disk can not wake up. :dry So next step, to deepen but not this WE because I will be busy.

Good WE
