I think we have found the reason of your problem
Please run the following command to find out which kernel you are running on your NS2

Code: Select all
uname -rv

If this returns something with 2.6.33.1 instead of 2.6.39.4 then we have found the reason of your problem
The 2.6.33.1 kernel needs to load the cifs module separately, the 2.6.39.4 kernel has it included in the kernel and the newer firmware doesn't load a cifs module anymore

In the upgrade process to 12-1 the kernel should have been upgrade to 2.6.39.4
if for whatever reason this did not happen on your NS2 and it is still using the the 2.6.33.1 kernel then indeed the mount will fail. It also explains why the NS2 does not detect any USB disk connected to the front port USB. Also that is managed differently and now designed for the 2.6.39.4 kernel

attached the kernel of the 12-1 firmware
unpack te zip file and put it somewhere on the NS2
then write it to /dev/sda6
Code: Select all
dd if=/path-to/UIMAGE-26394-NWSP2CL-9 of=/dev/sda6

replace "path-to" by the actual path to the place were you have put the kernel image
If for example you have put it in the fvdw share this will be /share/1000/fvdw
And finally be 100% sure you write it to /dev/sda6

UIMAGE-26394-NWSP2CL-9.zip

Hi,
great!! I tried your commands and in fact you're right, the cifs filesystem is not supported and the kernel version is still the old one. Don't know how this happened, as the upgrades were all ok. See here:
Code: Select all
root@nas:/ # cat /proc/filesystems |more
nodev        sysfs
nodev        rootfs
nodev        bdev
nodev        proc
nodev        tmpfs
nodev        sockfs
nodev        usbfs
nodev        pipefs
nodev        anon_inodefs
nodev        rpc_pipefs
nodev        inotifyfs
nodev        devpts
        ext3
        ext2
nodev        ramfs
        vfat
        msdos
nodev        nfs
nodev        nfsd
root@nas:/ # uname -rv
2.6.33.1 #50 PREEMPT Thu Jul 14 23:54:04 CEST 2011

I will now follow your instructions to install the updated kernel! :)
Will let you know in a while....

Great great great!!!!!!! :applause :applause :applause

Now it works, CIFS is supported and I could mount the router disk from the web interface of my NWSP2!!!! :woohoo

Really many thanks, now I will try to setup a backup schedule for my NAS :hail :hail :hail
Thanks a lot!!

I will save your last post and the attachment to the installation procedure file that I saved, when I flashed the firmware on the NAS, so I can remember in the future.
THANKS!!!

:-D glad to hear that this is solved

I wondered how it could be that the kernel was not upgrade when you installed the firmware upgrades.

Looking to the upgrades this could happen if you did not install fvdw-sl 10.1 but directly went from 10.0 (or earlier) to 11.0 or higher.
The version 10.1 had an upgrade of the firmware menu enabling writing a new kernel. 10.0 and before did not.
From 11.0 onwards the 2.6.39.4 kernel must be used.
When installing 11.0 or higher with 10.0 running on the NAS the kernel will not be upgraded as 10.0 is lacking that feature. :whistle
Also when then installing after that 12.0 or 12.1 the kernel will not be upgraded as well because it thinks it is already upgraded as the 11.0 firmware is present on the box. We should adapt our procedure to check which kernel is running.
So finally it is a bug that caused this problem.

Hi, in effect I started when version 11 was already available and I read in the forum that starting from version 9.0 was suggested.
I installed v9, then I upgraded via the web interface to v11.

Maybe I didn't read carefully, as I didn't understand that a step by step upgrade was supposed instead.

But you solved this, it's good that you recognized the problem and had a solution. If the procedure could be improved to avoid mistakes as mine, that's even better, so all the process can go towards more robusteness :)

Great work guys! :)
