I'm in the same boat, my 3tb drive running 15.3 firmware has failed so I went out and bought a 8tb. I tried to install fvdw-sl 17.0 on there and everything goes well up until it tries to partition the drive. It tries to partition /sda5 and the disk spins down and it says the drive is unable to boot up or something like that. It's been a week or so since I've tried to install it so I don't remember exactly what the message was. Any input?

Did you choose GPT for partition table setup?
And we need to know what exactly the message was when it failed in preparing sda5.
There is log file were you can read what thecinstaller did and why it failed (cat installer.log)

@fvdw: As this is a 2Tb NetworkSpace 2 the bootloader has to be the new one which supports GPT.
I remember I updated mine as it was not able to use HDDs > 2TB.

Is this considered in the toolbox ?

@wd9895
The nwsp2 lite has a bootloader that supports GPT but the nwsp2 classic not necessary. The older ones have a uboot version that do not has support for GPT.
However uboot is not the problem here as the standalone kernel is running, that has support for GPT.
So it can create a disk with gpt table. The bootloader issue will happen at boot and the disk will not boot when the loader doesn't support gpt. It will not cause the installation process failure when the installer is running with the standalone kernel.
If he has not selected GPT during running the installer then he can not use full capacity of the drive and creation of the partition table may have failed and as result sda5 is not available in that case

That looks like a defective disk to me. It can not be read and no partition table is created. So the message that the table is created is wrong.
What happens if you give this command on the command line
Code: Select all
gdisk -l /dev/sda

APM: not present
GPT: present

Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.

Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 15628053134
Partitions will be aligned on 2048-sector boundaries
