NS2 Initial install

NS2 Initial install

Postby keil0ren » Wed May 13, 2020 5:37 pm

Dear all,

I got my hands on a NS2, which I believe to be the classic version. The drive is attached to a switch by cable to which also my computer is connected by wire. My Win10 firewall is disabled.

Lacie Network Assistant 1.5.15 (72) discovers the NS2 at 192.168.1.240. I cannot access the drive via SMB from Win10 Pro. I guess that is a result of SMB1 being disabled by default. I do not want to enable SMB1 on Windws.

The NS2 according to Lacie Network Assistant runs OS version 1.2.6. I was unable to install either OS version 2.2.12.2 (it complains that version 1.2.6 is required for this) nor 2_2.2.10.1 (which complains that a legacy IPConf should be disabled - this already is the case).

I now stumbled upon your forum and read that you developed a custom firmware! This is so great! Thank you! :hail

I downloaded fvdw-sl-console 6.0 +fvdw-sl 18-1 and also xfvdw-sl-15-1-nwsp2-9feb2014 as I understand that this version needs to be installed prior to upgrading to 18-1.
After switching off the NS2 I start fvdw-sl-console, I select "Install fvdw-sl firmware" and choose "UIMAGE-3142-KIRKWOOD-171-standalone". TFTPD starts and the window opens telling me it waits for u-boot.
Then I switch on the NS2. It boots up. The clunc-open -i 192.168.1.240 window stays open and nothing else happens.

What did I miss?

Sorry if this is a stupid question and thank you so much for your help!

--- Edit below ---
For those maybe finding this thread in the future:
There appears to be no need for installing a previous version of fvdw-sl first. Running fvdw-sl-console according to the instructions provided when executing this application will do everything for you. I ended up with a completely installed system.

To answer myself: As stated in http://plugout.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2645 and other posts:
I missed that it really really really IS important to DISABLE all interfaces not used to connect to the wired network. :doh
This also solves the problem of flashing more current original Lacie software versions.

Sorry for the noise.

Dear fvdw,

please allow a follow-up question:
If I understand correctly, the default smbd supports SMB2. This means that access from Windows 10 pro is possible, isn't it?
I always get an error message when trying to access the ns2 entering "\\IP.of.ns.2\" into an explorer window. I also added a new user with the same credentials as on my windows machine.
Shouldn't there be a user/password request?

Thank you in advance for your help

Yes but you need to install samba-4.9.4.
Its available as addon, to be able to install it you must become donator.
Ps in windows 10 you can enable smb1 protocol, its disabled by default. If you enable it you can also use the samba 3.0.37 standard version. However smb2 and 3 protocol are more safe and have better performance
