Fastess way to download from the internet (wan side)

Hi!

what is the fastess way to download from the WAN side? (webdav , sftp , web explorer , ftp , vpn+smb etc...)

I did try by webdav and sftp but I do get abysmal download speed at my work: Approx 100KB/s It's not related to my network as I have 10 Mbits/s in upload from my provider and when I had a brand NAS I could obtain arount 1.2 MByte / sec. which is what is expected.

Is it related to the cpu? my job network? What kind of speed do you got?

Maybe is my work network that limit mu download speed but i'm interested what other have. I'll also try on my cell lte and let you know by then

Hi raidsm

First rw speed according to the servers on your LAN:
- the faster are samba / FTP but not secure with a remote access
- webdav is a bit slower as it uses more resource if you use http protocol (not secure!!!) and much slower with https protocol (encryption impact)
- web-explorer has the same speed but it is outdated (for example java applet runs no longer with Chrome). In next version I will try to install AjaXplorer to replace web-explorer.
- sftp is much slower : around 300k/s (encryption impact with a not fast CPU)
- vpn: same limit as sftp

From wan, it is the same issue when you have a cloud hosting by your ISP.
- if you have an ADSL Internet access, upload speed is much slower than download speed and have an upload speed around 100-110 KB/s is the max speed. Then when you upload for example some big documents on your Cloud, this may take a long time.
- You may have a nice upload speed with a fiber Internet access or a mobile Internet access (3G/4G). Some routers may have this feature (but be careful with your Mobile Internet bundle)

Now when you have a remote access on your NAS :
- when you want to read/play a file from the NAS, then the limit is your Internet upload speed (=> 100kB/s with ADSL) as you upload a file from the NAS to a remote host
- when you want to save/write a file on the NAS the limit is your Internet download speed (much better) as you download a file from a remote host to the NAS

Hi Jocko,

thanks , and I'm on cable 10Mbits upload speed. (15Mb download) I get 1.2MB upload effectively when I had a synology or asus NAS.
On the wan side , as smb is not possible , FTP should be the fastest method. Sometime I would like to Stream a movie from the NS2 but using webdav on IE was far to slow to stream some content. I'll try on FTP then

I don't use the webexplorer as it's far too limited but Ajaxplorer would be a great solution! I saw some tutorial on how to install it directly on the root of the web server here: https://www.it-connect.fr/ajaxplorer-un ... la-maison/

Is this Something I could try to install (as a newby) or there are too many dependencies so it needs to be done by a pro like you? ;)
edit: i'm installing it right now and I'm in the configuration menu... I'm using 5.0.4...

Well, I did installed Pydio 5.0.4. Seems to work really great and interface speed is good (considering the harware. )

Now I just need to understant how to link existing folder on the nas to the pydio explorer (symlink? ) I'll start a newtread for that!
