My NS2 maxed out at 56 degrees Celcius.
Does it shutdown automatically when it's too hot?
no it doesn't, and 56 degrees is pretty hot but still ok for a harddisk if you believe what is written about it on the internet. Both beside the hdd also the cpu becomes rather hot. it is underneath the HDD. The nwsp2 has no fan to cool the interior of the casing and this is a pity as heta isnever good for lifetime of electronic components. I run my nwsp2 positioned on its side wall instead of the "normal" position. This release the heat easier. My HHD never comes above 45 oC but I use a WD green caviar 2TB drive that runs at 5400 rpm it seems to generate less heat that the original samsung disk.
An auto switch off could be made by running a small daemon looking at disk temperature. Not all disks however support the temperature reading but most of the newer ones do.
