trying to install version 11

Postby galaberta » Sun Oct 28, 2012 11:23 am

Hi there,
I bought the Lacie NSP2 a month ago, and I did not manage to make the video streaming work on a tv sony bravia.
So, I decided to install this version 11-0 firmware to try if it works, as it has some additional media streamers.

The problem is that after following all the steps, the nas does not boot.... only blue and red lights blinking....

I guess I must have done something wrong... I think that the problem is my hard disk a seagate barracuda green 2TB, with the sectors size of 4096kb, and fdisk only recognises my disk as 4096, so either I "broke" something during the proccess or my disk only supports 4096 kb per sector???

I think that my problem (or my disk) is similar to Berny's question last 2 july 2012, but i think he never managed to make it work... (viewtopic.php?f=11&t=666)

This is what I get when I press fdisk /dev/sdb:

Disco /dev/sdb: 2000.4 GB, 2000398934016 bytes
255 cabezas, 63 sectores/pista, 30400 cilindros
Unidades = cilindros de 16065 * 4096 = 65802240 bytes
Tamaño de sector (lógico / físico): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Tamaño E/S (mínimo/óptimo): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Identificador del disco: 0x9b7e53f1

Dispositivo Inicio Comienzo Fin Bloques Id Sistema
/dev/sdb1 1 8 513056 83 Linux
/dev/sdb2 9 16 514080 83 Linux
/dev/sdb3 17 24 514080 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sdb4 25 30400 1951961760 5 Extendida
/dev/sdb5 25 40 1027136 83 Linux
/dev/sdb6 41 41 63236 83 Linux
/dev/sdb7 49 56 514080 83 Linux
/dev/sdb8 57 30400 1949904416 83 Linux

Please could anyone help me??? :please
Thanks a lot for your help!!!
Best regards

mmm.. this looks the same as described in this topic

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=897

If you have nwsp2-lite then you could try to partition the disk with a GPT partition table, but you will need o use a different kernel as the the one included in 11-0 doesn't support GPT. I added that kernel in the download forum where first time install package is for nwsp2
If you have nwsp2 classic then you can not use disk with GPT partition table as the bootloader of the nwsp2-classic doesn't support it.
So if you have a nwsp2 classic I am afraid that the disk won't work as long as it has 4096 Bytes logical sector size
Its very strange that these disk loose the 512 Byte logical sector size. I have a nwsp2 running myself with the same seagate disk but that reports 512 Bytes logical sector size.

Thanks very much for your quick response.
Luckily, I have a lite version, so, I can do what you recommend.
but, given that I am not a very experienced person in this issues, which software can i use to make those GPT partitions? and also, which partition table? the same as in your instructions (243201 cylinders - and I create the same 8 partitions) or mine (30400 cylinders)?
Thanks again

I never used GPT until today but I read all the other used Gparted.

if logical sector size is 4096 you must your cylinder values (30400) and the (GPT) table like this
Note that a GPT partitioned disk doesn't use "extended" partitions, as such there is made a small partition of 1 cylinder is defined for sdb4
I should look then like this

Code: Select all
partition  start      end
          cylinder  cylinder
sdb1       1            8
sdb2       9            16
sdb3       17          24
sdb4       25          25
sdb5       26          36
sdb6      36          36
sdb7      37          44
sdb8     45         30400

by the way, just to clarify, start cylinder in sdb3 should be 17 instead of 10, right?

Hi Again,
I formatted the HDD with Gparted in GPT type, and I also used Gparted to create the partitions.
I made the rest of the steps according to your instructions, copied the file UIMAGE-26394-NWSP2CL-51 in sdb6, but still does not work..... first, I get a steady blue light, then it blinks for a couple of seconds, and after, the blue light stays steady and the red light blinks..

This is how my partitions look like now:

Any suggestion?
Thanks very much!!!
